I keep wondering..

Perhaps it's been expounded upon before, but I keep wondering if the GPS device manufacturers would at some point decide to post free map upgrades on their web sites as a means to lure more to purchase their devices vs the competitors device. Surely, they could justify adding a few bucks to the price for this incentive. Also, as the maps continue to evolve beyond the internal storage capcity of hardware, and/or device features improve, folks then decide upon a device upgrade.

Don't Own

The gpsr manufacturers don't own the maps - they pay a license for them. They are not going to give away a ~$20-30 product every time you want to update. It will be interesting to see if TomTom/Tele goes through what happens for map updates.

Think of it this way, you own a dell computer that is 4 years old, are they going to provide you a free upgrade to vista? I think not...

Yes, I'd love to see it occur. And I think we can expect that date to arrive shortly after inkjet printer manufacturers offer free ink-for-life on their printer purchases. Oh well...

Logic Prevails...
