Chatty Charley thread for the week of March 3rd 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

Miss Poi

Daylight Savings Time Begins Next Sunday

Under the recently changed format we begin Daylight Savings time next Sunday. Just wondering what the concensus is relative to the recent change. So if given the choice, would you:

A) Eliminate Daylight Savings time all together (just have standard time),

B) Go back to the earlier Daylight Savings time (eliminate the extra weeks),

C) Keep Daylight Savings time just as it is now,

D) Increase Daylight Savings time to even a few more weeks

E) Switch to Daylight Savings time year round.

My vote is C - I sort of like the extra weeks. However, I'm not sure I'd like to make DST any longer.

Some useless trivia

The SHORTEST Interstate Highway in the US is I-74 which is 12.1 miles long (no-that's not a typo) and goes from East Cana, VA (I-77) to Mount Airy, NC (US-52).

The LONGEST Interstate Highway in the US is I-90 which is 3020.5 miles long and goes from Boston-Seattle. (man, a lot of rest areas on that one)

Random thoughts...

Re: DST - don't screw with the clocks - just change your habits - work 7am to 4pm part of the year?? But, as long as we have to do that "change the clocks" ritual, everyone needs to do one thing: When you change the clocks, change the batteries in your smoke detectors, CO detectors, and every other little battery powered object you keep about your house to monitor something for your health and safety.

Yes check the smoke/fire

Yes check the smoke/fire detectors, in the local area 5 were just recently lost in a fire with no working detectors.

Before this gets too far out of hand...in this case, 'interstate' is a class of highway, with specific criteria for how they're constructed and accessed, etc. and not 'interstate' in a literal sense for obvious reasons.

Why do we drive on parkways & park on driveways? And have you ever wondered how many moles it takes to get a jar of molasses?

Ditto. I still have issues with my PDA whenever I do a hard reset, and have to reload the patch.

Another useless trivia. The longest day falls on March 9 this year. NOT June 21, which is the longest daylight of the year.

And the shortest day this year is November 2. 25-hour day and 23-hour day, respectively.

My vote is for E, but I'll settle for C. I definitely like the "extra" daylight at the end of the day. Most years the change doesn't phase me too much, but this time I'm making my weekly "commute" early, so it's going to really hit me on Sunday. "Losing" an hour and going from MDT to EDT. Come Monday, I'll be a mess!

Having the shortest interstate in the country is nothing to brag about. Know why? Because that highway was nothing more than a bone thrown to some politician. Like that bridge in Alaska between some remote island and nowhere. Pure pork.
I never even heard about I-74 until just now, but I bet that it's not all that heavily used and if truth be told, wasn't all that necessary. But it keeps the local voters happy, even if it's all of us that are paying for it.
Just blowin' off some steam.

Okay Spider... I'll bite. Where'd you find that useless trivia? Would love to read where a day is not 24 hours. LOL... maybe not, perhaps it's just my insomnia kicking in! However, for the sake of discussion... please, provide a source to read about that trivia. confused

I vote for E.

I vote for E.

The source of the trivia

Simple. And I actually had those two days flipped.

On the day the daylight saving starts, you jump ahead so you lose an hour, resulting in the 23-hour day, which makes it the shortest (not the longest as I previously stated) day of the year.

The longest day of the year is the day the daylight saving ends, falling back an hour, resulting in the 25-hour day.

The longest daylight of the year is the summer solstice.

I just looked those dates up on my wall calendar.

Depends

spider_elliott wrote:

The longest day of the year is the day the daylight saving ends, falling back an hour, resulting in the 25-hour day.

The longest daylight of the year is the summer solstice.

Depends on your definition of a day. The actual, scientific definition of a day is the amount of time it takes the earth for one rotation. It has nothing to do with humans adjusting their clocks. The rotation of the earth is slowing down at a miniscule rate. The gravitational pull of the moon adds a little drag to the earth's rotation causing the slowdown. So each day is a little longer than the preceding one by a small fraction of a nanosecond. When you read this, it will be the longest day of the year so far.

You are correct that the longest DAYLIGHT of the year is the summer solstice, which is around June 22 in the northern hemisphere (and around December 22 in the southern hemisphere). So, if you are in the U.S. on July 4, and someone says the days are getting longer, you can tell them that they are correct from a scientific point of view, but that the daylight is actually getting shorter compared to the day before. I've done that and it really puts a damper on 4th of July parties.

Wanna have some fun?!!!!

While going down the highway, do you ever see those stickers on the back of truck trailers that say "How's My Driving? Call ######"? Just recently I did and called. Told the dispacher that the driver was doing just fine. Was courteous and all. The dispatcher didn't know what to make of it!

Found out later (was having coffee with him) that the driver of the truck got the message and it turned a lousy day into a pretty good one.

Try it! Brighten someone's day who just may be having a bad day.

Some night, stop in at a local truck stop and meet some of the guys and gals that bring you your food, clothing, etc. You'll find that we're just a regular bunch of people that like to meet others. There are no strangers in the world. Just people you haven't met yet.
