Dear KD,

I had the same problem and called Garmin. The helpful fellow there told me that there is a problem if one has BMP-files that one is uploading and, of course, most of us here probably do have BMP-files we want to load. He told me that they are working on solving the problem.

He also gave me the address where I could download Version 242. That address is: http://gpsinformation.org/perry

I downloaded the old version and all is well again.

Just Got Off The Phone With Garmin

Yep, you all are correct... Just got off the phone with them as well. They are having issues with the v2.5.1 loader. So if you haven't already upgraded, don't :0) If you have, uninstall and download v2.4.2 from the web address above. Thanks everyone, kdehaan

I have version 242 if you

I have version 242 if you can't find it. It's all zipped up and ready to go......oh, and I had to go back to version 242 as well.

You can get version 242 here:

http://www.clintsworld.com/temp/POI_Loader_242.zip

Might as well help out with a mirror.

Downloaded the 251

I just downloaded the POI Loader 251. Almost install it until I read the above comments. Does Garmin test its software version before releasing it to the public? Doesn't speak well for Garmin.

I don't have any BMP files

I don't have any BMP files and it crashes for me. I suspect it is a memory limit causing the issue. Using BMPs would certainly grow the memory foot print, but I have 794,000 POIs which also causes the latest POI loader to crash.

back to version 2.4.2

gpsinfo 242 better than the 242 I had downloaded from Garmin

Dear KD,

One interesting effect of downloading 242 from Gpsinfo is that my TourGuide alerts started working. They had not been working with the 242 I had downloaded from Garmin when I bought the unit.

2.5.1 beta version ;-)

Has anybody figured out what the intention of the "Mapsource (advanced)" Save Option is?

If you enter a fully qualified filename, it blows up (email sent to Garmin). If you just enter a filename, it creates a .GPI in:-

C:\Documents and Settings\...\Application Data\GARMIN\CustomPOIs

Mapsource - even the latest greatest version - doesn't read .gpi files.

odd!

Keep us updated...

Keep us updated with this new POI version .....

POI Loader 2.5.1

At least Garmin changed the program name so that we didn't lose the 2.4.2 version if we happened to install the new version into the same folder, like I did.
I'd like to think that Garmin did that intentionally, but given the piece of cr*p that 2.5.1 is, I think I'd be giving them way too much credit. More likely, it was just dumb luck.
It never fails to amaze me how companies can release new code that apparently hasn't been tested. Today's problems are not the kinds that show up only in some really unusual environment; from everyone's description, 2.5.1 fails in the most basic of environments. And if it was tested, Garmin must be in some parallel universe of their own.

v2.4.2 is back

I see Garmin removed the v2.5.1 today and replaced it with v2.4.2 .... hmmm, I wonder why.

Seriously though, when considering all the units the Loader has to work with, I can see where a new software problem can develop. Beta testing?? Microsoft has us doing that all of the time, until the next OS comes out; and then it starts all over again.

Working for a software

Working for a software company, I fully sympathize with Garmin. it is sometime really hard to catch bugs. You just don't catch every possiblity.

I wonder though

Thanks for the information guys, nice to read this before learning it the hard way.

Those glitches are weired though, problems began with the new firmware update arrow http://www.poi-factory.com/node/10865 and then now with poi loader! It seems that every FREE software upgrade from Garmin is on question. And even Mapsource is not perfect as reported by "Hornbyp".

This makes most FREE software updates Garmin release have a problem.

ISSUES?!

the new loader is working great for mev ( knock on wood) smile

Everyday is a GREAT day :)

ISSUES?!

I didn't read all the comments and loaded the new one without a hitch. I think it has something to do with the model number you have. The Garmin c340 was no problem.

Anybody else without a problem with new update?

Which version did you all install?

Are you sure you're referring to v2.5.1? If you downloaded it recently from the link above, you probably downloaded v2.4.2 as it was changed back today.

2.5.1 appears to be working fine for me...

I downloaded it at work today and used it a few times without crashing. I can't however see my POI's on mapsource, not sure what I'm doing wrong there. When I checked in here I see that many are having issues and that Garmin pulled the file. I'll keep playing with it for now and revert to 2.4.2 if I have problems.

You probably donloaded 2.4.2

Earl-Nuvi 350

Um, no, it's 2.5.1

I get options to save POI to
-Garmin Device
-Mapsource (Advanced)
-Custom Folder (Advanced)

I didn't get those options prior to this version so I assume that it's version 2.5.1.

Also I still have the file on my HD and it's titled,
POILoaderforWindows_251.exe

edit: Now it will start crashing on me, lol.

Thanks

Glad I did not install the latest.. Thanks for the heads up...

Well I got a really fast response from someone calling themselves a 'Software Support Specialist'. Unfortunately, the reply may as well have come from the Tea lady, for all the sense it made sad

Usual stuff - remove and re-install everything (including the usb drivers!) - a cut-and-paste answer in other words.

...and no mention of what this option might actually do, if it were to work.

I wonder if I'll receive one of those 'Customer satisfaction surveys'?. I recently awarded Yahoo! 1/10 (but only because 0/10 wasn't an option wink ).

v2.5.1 is the one I downloaded, But a funny thing happened. Was changing firewalls and the poiloader was something it asked if I wanted, but before I could answer, it was removed. Had to load old one, as the new one was removed from their website.

I did.. :-(

I installed the newest version. Would not work in Vista, just kind of froze there. So I booted to XP and tried it there. It seemed to work just fine. So now I have the new one on XP and the older one on Vista.

thx!

Thanks for the heads up, I would have downloaded it and installed it too. I figure if something is released it has been QC'd at least minimally before the public has a chance to get it.

Dismal Technical Support experience :-(

I wrote:

Not satisfied with the first reply, I tried again:

Thank you for contacting GARMIN International. I would be glad to assist you with this and I first recommend that you click on the link below and download the previous version of POI Loader and retry this again:

Quite how retrying the earlier version, is going to offer an explanation of a feature that wasn't in it, is beyond me.

...and I have 0% confidence that my bug report concerning this new feature, has been passed back to the developers. sad

Garmin support is really good at sending out replacement equipment (you know, sticking labels on boxes, licking stamps - that sort of thing). But Technical Support? - they've really not a got a clue sad

POI loader 2.5.1

I haven't switched to the new version and won't until it's fixed. In general I make a habit out of keeping at least the latest working version of Garmin updates on my PC. Comes in handy sometimes.

Interesting..

What's most interesting about this thread is that it appears that Garmin did not post access to a beta version 2.5.1 but instead just switched from 2.4.2? If so then looks like everyone who made the change was on the "bleading edge" of technology.
