Adding maps to C340 with a SD.

Hello everyone, great site you guys have here. I bought my C340 with the new 2008 city navigator map on it, which was great. I use the gps for pizza delivery and some of the streets/neighborhoods are not listed.

I have been doing alot of looking around for how to add maps to it, which i have gotten very close to it (might just be off by a little). Openstreetmap has streets i need, i then use JOSM to save file as an osm file type. Then i convert that to an iso file and have sent that to my garmin successfully. When i look at my garmin and locate to the area where the streets should have been a see a box around that area (close i think).

Another way i have gone about it, get the map data again from OSM and with JOSM save as a GPX file type, open up in MapSource, and i can see the streets and everything. ( http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/6818/closezz2.png ) and have transfeered the map from mapsource to my garmin which i know transferred ok cause i can see the map i just uploaded but the streets are not there?

edit:when i transfer the map from mapsource, theres "What to send" Maps,Waypoints,Route,Tracks. the only one that is checked is maps, im not sure how to get tracks option enabled, i know how to get waypoints, and maps though.

Can anyone help the poor man out? worked hours on this today and other days as well, if what i said does not make sense ill explain in more detail.

Thanks again,
Brock

If the maps you loaded overlap the same areas as your City Navigator maps, you might need to turn your CN maps off to see the other maps.

that did not seem to work

Maybe the maps aren't compatible with the unit.

When you go to Wrench > Map > Map Info, do the maps show up in the list? Are they checked?

Edited to add: I just relooked at your screenshot and there aren't any maps showing under the Map tab.

Yes.

I didnt have the map selected in that one, when i transferred i did.

Well, me guess is that the maps aren't compatible.

I had this issue when I tried to load the New Zealand maps from the Open Map program. The showed up on the list, but the details wouldn't show. I seem to recall reading something about them not being compatible with the NT version of the map, but since it wasn't a big deal to me, I didn't investigate any further. So, it's just a stab in the dark.

You might try sending a message to the guys as cgpsmapper.

thanks for your help Mama,

I finally got another map in

I finally got another map in my C340, and its visible only when i dont have the normal 08' map enabled.

is there anyway i can get my custom map to merge with the garmin map. if not that, have it so i can search for streets on the custom maps i added my self.

Moral of all my questions is, when i add my custom maps is there a way to have it routable, or is the map area just viewable.

.

1. No, you can't get your map to merge with the preloaded maps.

2. It probably won't be searchable unless you coded all that information into it and probably still not then.

3. I'm stretch with my knowledge of the subject, but from what I understand, I don't think that these types of maps are routable especially with units that use the NT version of the Garmin map. And if they are, it takes a bunch more work when you are creating them.

For example, even the TOPO maps available from Garmin don't contain routable information for the US.
