Any Maps for the Dominican Republic ?

I recently returned from the Dominican Republic. I love driving there but I must caution anyone that does not have nerves of steel and 360 degree vision not to engage in the life threatening practice of driving there unless you have experience driving in other Latin American countries where the are no rules of the road that are ever enforced.

My question is are there maps available so that when I am in an unfamiliar part of one of the major cities, such as Santo Domingo I can get some GPS help.

Thanks

I looked here and didn't see the D. R. listed. You may check more thoroughly.

I have a friend is who is going to the Dominican Republic and wants to take his Nüvi 350 with him.

I possibly found one at
arrow http://mapcenter.cgpsmapper.com/maplist.php?lat=&lon=&text=D...

but there something a little strange about it. (Someone has uploaded a finished map, as an input file).

I'll do some investigating wink

EDIT

That particular map, looks like a part of Garmin's World Map to me...

I found another map here:
arrow http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com/maplist.php?country=14&regi...

but it's only a small section of the island.

You are correct in that it is only a tiny fraction of the country, less than 500 sq Km's; the country is over 18,000 sq Km's

Big map :-)

OK - I found another one. This one is so big, that it won't compile with the (restricted) commercial version of cgpsmapper at Mapcenter.com. However, if you download the source from:

arrow http://mapcenter.cgpsmapper.com/getmap.php?id=3862&type=src

and build it locally - you will end up with a roadmap of the Dominican Republic. (As to its accuracy - I have no idea.)

Extract the Rep-Dominicana.mp from the zip file and call it something like 00500050.mp. Use the free version of cgpsmapper to produce 00500050.imp (takes quite a while!) and then sendmap20.exe to convert it to GMAPSUPP.IMG and copy to SD card. (Always test new maps on SD card first).

If required, load into Mapsource, using MAPSETTOOLKIT.

This website has the entire Caribbean.

This website has the entire Caribbean. They work with MapSource. I used them earlier this month. The roads are not routable.

Earlier, I wrote:

Of course, I meant 00500050.img!

The 'feature grid' seems to indicate that the Dominican Republic map only has contour data (with same detail for roads as the Basemap) - but I'll investigate further.

The contour maps will show the roads

The contour maps will show the roads (digitized USGS Maps) but they won't be routable.

We are currently developing the map of Dominicana. There are all cities, roads, points of interest, and of course, routing.

GPS MAPS - DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Yes, there is a really good Dominican Republic GPS map for use in your Garmin device over at
http://www.gpstravelmaps.com/dominican_republic.php
or http://store.payloadz.com/detail_html.as…

It is an easy download then upload to your gps device. I was so busy with work that I did not have time to order a GPS map and wait for it to be shipped before I left for my trip. Also the prices for other GPS maps were so expensive compared to how affordable the GPS map from www.GPSTravelMaps.com cost. This one is great because you can download it to your PC or Mac. I did this at 11pm the night before my flight. LIFESAVER! This Dominican Republic GPS map was simply incredible while my buddies and I traveled.

if there are maps make sure

if there are maps make sure you find ones with alerts for not so friendly areas. Thelast thing you want is to be driving at night through a "not so nice area" with everyones wide open eyes and drooling mouth fixed on your GPS thats glowing as bright as the stars on your front windshield. AKA Target.

unofficial rules for international GPS

unreliable map = keeps you on the main roads

A too Reliable maps = puts you on back roads you might not have wanted to been on.
