Turning right on Red

I know several people who claimed they turned right on red and the redlight cameras ticketed them. The turning right on red is legal in Ohio. I haven't had it happen to me personally but since other people claimed it happened to them I just don't turn right on red at camera intersections. Was wondering if anybody else had any experiences like this or have ever heard of it.

Turning Right on Red

Yes, this is an increasingly common complaint about these cameras. Right turns on red lights are permitted in Texas but I am told that numerous such complaints have been made by persons in the Houston area. I have not personally experienced the problem butI now avoid making right turns on red lights whenever I come up on one of these intersections.

Right

It's OK in Philly unless it's posted NO TURN ON RED.

Since I'm from NYC, I'm used

Since I'm from NYC, I'm used to the rule no right turns on red, so when I go out of the city I always get honked at to turn.

no turn on red

i'm from jersey and i'm always confused if i will be in new york so this poi files will really help a lot..

interesting

That's something to think about, having your picture taken making a right turn at a red light camera location. Then receiving a ticket?!
Would be most interesting hearing from anyone that's had that experience.

In Calilfornia, the same

In Calilfornia, the same rule is that you are allowed to
right hand turns on a red light, as long as you come to a complete full stop and is safe to make the turn.

Florida also

In Florida you can turn right on red also but you have to make a complete stop first, that is the law.I also know that some drivers do not make a complete stop and they never received a ticket.I guess it is the location of the cameras and if they are working properly.

Tennessee Also

In Tennessee you can turn right also on a redlight unless other wise posted also after making a complete stop. but after reading the forums i will be more careful around places where the cameras are set up.

OK in GA

In Georgia it is OK to turn right on red light unless it says not to do it.

what was the question?

I believe the question was about turning right on a red light AND being flashed by the red light camera.
Of course turning on a red would have to be a legal maneuver per any particular state and with regard to any no turn on red signs, as well as coming to a complete stop first.
I don't think the question was soliciting which states have or don't have a legal right turn on red law.
Maybe the people TDRV2000 knows failed to come to a complete stop first? or did the cameras just take the picture after the complete stop, then making the legal turn on red? Also, did they get out of the tickets or end up paying?

Turning right on Red

That is a good point you bought up. The persons who said they were ticketed said they came to complete stop. But I don't know how the timing is set on cameras. Maybe if you turn too soon after your light turns red it will flash just like you run light? Or does it always flash as long as the light is red? Sounds like this is a common problem where it is legal to turn right on red.

ouch

I dont' know but I think I don't like it!

No problem here

The cameras we have in Springfield haven't caught me on any right turns... Yet... Maybe it's the placement of the sensors in some cities? Because I drive all over town, I do get to see them catch people from time to time, it's kinda cool to see the stobes going off, almost a distraction.

Here in Houston they have

Here in Houston they have people who watch the red light camera video and decide wheather they get a ticket or not. So I don't think right hand turns on red are a problem here. -AD

you get a ticket in LA

my brother didn't come to a complete stop at a red light in LA and got a ticket in the mail for red light running. (expensive~ ticket was $350 +$40 to bypass something so you don't get points +?? traffic school....) In San Diego, the police have and will give you a ticket for not coming to a complete stop at stopsign or red light.

Turning right on Red

Folks,

Right turn on red is a Federal law - not a state by state law. It was enacted to save gas many moons ago. The federal law states that you must come to a complete stop - clear traffic to the left, then safely negotiate a turn to the right. Probably tough to fight in court, but I'd fight it never the less. This is for ANY intersection not otherwise marked (i.e. NO TURN ON RED). In the case stated above, he deserved the ticket, because he did not come to a COMPLETE stop before turning right.

No right turn on red in NYC

As far as I remember, there are exceptions to the right turn on red. New York City, for one, did not allow it at all within city limits.

The question is not the

The question is not the legality of a right on red, it's following the law and getting snapped by the red light cameras.

I also came by this: (A State requirement mandated by congress). I suppose you could call that a federal law.

Congress requires states to enact a traffic law allowing drivers to turn right at a red light or left from a one-way street onto another one-way street after coming to a full stop as a condition for participating in the State Energy Program (SEP).
About Right Turn on Red

Since 1980, all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico have laws permitting right-turn-on-red unless a sign prohibits the turn. This provision was established through one of the predecessor programs of the State Energy Program, State energy offices are responsible to monitor state laws to make sure they are in compliance with federal requirements. (For background see SEP history.) Such laws are intended to accelerate the flow of traffic and reduce fuel consumption.

Reply to Ismonop

I agree, the question is about red light cameras. I just didn't want anyone to get the wrong impression. Serveral google searches for NYC and turn on redlight show the following: "THROUGHOUT THE UNITED States, with the exception of New York City, right turn on red (RTOR) generally is permitted unless otherwise prohibited by a posted traffic sign (in New York City, RTOR is generally prohibited unless otherwise permitted at specific locations by posted traffic signs).

MD

MD aslo permits right after red after a full stop.
If you get a ticket in such instance, it is best to appeal, appear in court and explain the error.

I saw the sign!

The other day I was at intersection with camera. I noticed a sign saying right turn on red was permitted after stop. This is the first time I have ever saw sign like that at camera intersection. I don't know how many others might have signs but would clear up confusion.

RIGHT TURN ON RED

In St. Louis right turn on red is leagal unless posted. But at camera intersections their really getting people on not making a complete stop. Rolling the stop sign and then recieving the ticket in the mail.

hmm....laws are signs

If there is no sign that says no turn on red signal then turn. Sometimes there is a sign that says right turn yield which doesn't mean stop but does me watch yourself. I have turned everyday and if i get a ticket i will fight and win because there is no sign saying not to turn on red. If there is no sign you can get away with it no matter what state....unless that state makes it a written law that you can't turn right at any light when red.

Once Again....

Federal laws (right turn on red) cannot be usurped by state laws. What states can do is post "No turn on red" signs at intersections. If no sign is posted, federal law takes precedent, and the right turn (after a full stop) is perfectly legal. Somebody above provided the federal statute that can be used if one is cited for turning right (legally) at any state intersection.

You're right and because of

You're right and because of this, and if you drive in Washington, DC, you'll see "No Turn on Red" signs at nearly every intersection.
.

Another city

Right turn on red is legal in most areas of Nevada, unless it is posted NO TURN ON RED, or NO TURN ON RED PERMITTED. I have made many right turns, and nothing has come of it.

Turning right on Red

Yeah in CA. it's legal to make a right turn on a red, unless there's a sign posted of course. I have made a right turn on a redlight camera intersection a few times (mostly in the Santa Clarita area) and never got a ticket from it. Have yet to hear about someone actually getting a ticket from doing that.

Re: Turning right on Red [in Ohio]

In Ohio, that would be "Right Turn On Red After Stop". They might be ticketing for the right turn if they don't see the stop. Anything for revenue enhancement...

It happened to me!

Yes, I received an automated ticket in Culver City, CA for making a LEGAL right on red. My mistake? Apparently I didn't make a full stop at the red light before making the turn, so I had to pay $400 for a "rolling stop".

In Maryland, it's OK to turn

In Maryland, it's OK to turn red on right too... Unless there is a sign posted otherwise.

And even stranger.... You can turn LEFT on a red light in Maryland.... IF.... you are turning left OFF/FROM a One-Way street onto another One-Way street.

I never knew it before..... but My State Police Trooper friend told me.

Right on Red - Redlight Cameras

I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV. However, from my reading of various traffic related forums, the sensor for the cameras runs parallel to the crosswalk. After the light turns red, if a vehicle crosses the plane within a few seconds the camera snaps a picture of whatever is in the intersection. This is only for a number of seconds just after the light turns red. Exactly how many seconds, I don’t know.

So, if you are in the intersection making a left turn and the light turns red, if you make a right turn on red after coming to a complete stop, or if you are an emergency vehicle that runs a light that has been red for a while then there will not be a picture taken. Personally, I wait until the cross traffic begins to moves before making my right on red.

I'm still waiting for post

I'm still waiting for post from someone that
1) turn-right-on-red after a full-stop AND
2) was pictured/ticketed by the red-light camera

I wanted to know whether that person have to pay for the ticket.

Turning Right on red

I turn right on red frequently downtown Columbus at one of the camera lights and have yet to be ticketed. As long as you obey the law by first coming to a complete stop, looking both ways and proceed with your turn you will be ok, then again here in Columbus you should also consider the above steps even if the light is green!!!! Ohio drivers....you gotta love them!

in maryland, i saw a camera

in maryland, i saw a camera capture someone turning on red when there was a "no turn on red" sign.

In Ontario you can turn rt

In Ontario you can turn rt on a red but you have to come to a complete stop first and of course if there is a sign that says no turn on red then you have to wait. Also they don't have cameras in every red light location. They rotate the cameras around to the different boxes so you don't know if it is live or an empty box at that time.

I think at every red light

I think at every red light camera, you must come to a complete stop for like 2secs before you can actually make the turn. I know of 3 of my friends who got tickets at the camera for making a right without stopping on the red light first >_<

i got the same ticket

i got the same ticket

Its not a federal law

Agree with above poster - its not really a federal law "you can turn" but a federal motivation for states to change their laws. Its not a federal law though - states make their own traffic laws. If they dont want the $$ from the energy program, they can change their Right turn on red laws as much as they want and can "usurp" the federal "mandate". There is still wide variance on how they're written. in NC - there is no left turn onto a one way street from a one way street on a red light - which is not the case in lots of other states....

Turnbing on Red at Cameras

At least, having the redlight camera POIs' warnings, we know where we need to be extra conservative in stopping and turning.
