Why add POI's

I have a new 660, it SEEMS to have lots of POI's in it already - for example it already looks like it has the flying J stops, do I need to add the POI file on this site ?

There are a lot of threads

There are a lot of threads on here about why you should have custom POIs, but in short...

custom POIs tend to be more current and accurate. they help with organization of pois that you are intrested in. I also use it as a contact list and I have everyone in my office in my nuvi.

The best reason? Things

The best reason? Things change! Stores/gas stations/resteraunts close/move as do red light cams/speed zones.

You have to update your POIs when that happens.

billions

Just because the "flying J" may show in you area that doesn't mean all the "flying J" in the US are included in the POI

The Garmin Nuvi has around six million POI pre-loaded and there are more than six million businesses in the US, probably in the billions.

Custom POIs

Besides the above stated reasons with custom pois you don't have to look so far into the preloaded pois to find what you want. (Avoid typing while driving 80 MPH.) You set them up the way You want them.

Well I Added Some

I added some POI's, and it is kinda nice, the way they organize. But when I try to remove them with the POI Loader - nothing happens.

POI location may not have an address

When we go trailriding, we add new parking areas to the POI list and share them with friends. It's not easy to find parking lots for horse trailers. Areas that might be usefull to your hobby might not have an address to find the location.

Go into windows explorer and just delete them

Aw Come ON !

That's TOOOO easy !

Thanks !

What Am I Looking For?

Adding custom POIs allows one to concentrate on what is important. It is much easier for me to pull up my custom POI list of Starbucks to find the closest one, than it is to scroll through a list of other businesses. One limit to the nüvi is that when looking up POIs it only gives a list of the first 50. What if that Starbucks isn't there. It happens a lot in an area that is very commercial.

In reality I've read that it's more like 20 million if everything possible was included. But not all of those are consumer type businesses.

Maybe

I think 20 million is a low number if you consider all the possibilities for a POI

20 million sounds high to me

Most POI's need someone to run them, at least one owner. There are 300 million people in the U.S. and I think that almost half of them are under 21. If there are 175 million adults and 6 million POI's, that means about 30 adults per POI. I wouldn't think that there are many more than 1 person in 30 who is a business owner. But if one in 15 (or 2 in 30) is, that would mean 12 million possible POI's. There are other variables, like some POI's are parks or other non-businesses. Or one person may own more than one business. But still, I think that there would be less than 20 million possible POI's in the U.S., not including custom ones like cameras.
