Entering Rural Street Addresses

I am new to the 660 and ran into an issue that I finally solved, but off and on, it took me 3 days. I was trying to enter my in-law's (no jokes, please) address into my favorites. The Post Office lists their street as W COUNTY ROAD 200 N. Well, the nuvi didn't like that. I tried several variations of it, still no good. Finally, I got on my PC, went to Google Maps (Navteq) and navigated to their street. Come to find out, Navteq calls it W 200 N. So I punched that in and bingo, it found their house, no problem.

If I was on the road, sitting in my car with no PC, how would I have known that? Is there some "standard notation" for non-word street names I don't know about?

Thanks!

sometimes

Sometimes you can do a partial name and enter that and it will give you a list of names that you may or may not be looking for.

Yeah, I have (and I am sure

Yeah, I have (and I am sure many others) had the same experience. What I have learned to do is to be as general as possible. Most direction (north, south, etc) is N, S, etc.

Your parent in law's addy is hard though. I would probably have tried just "Country road" first, then when that didn't, I would have tried W 200, am I am sure that would probably have worked.

Wouldn't have bothered! After all it was the "In laws"!

Less is best

Like Charley says sometimes less is better I don't even put in N or West...I put in the 200 and then pick from the choices..it will give you a couple.

That is the same problem

That is the same problem with Streets and Trips-- You have to type in the correct name and if it is off a little, it will not find it.

I Knew it. Just couldn't resist, could ya. laugh out loud

Actually, I get along very well with my in-laws.

I tried just 200 and it didn't pull up the street. When I tried W 200, it did. But it didn't recognize CR or COUNTY RD or CNTY RD. Goofy.

County Road

funny ... my in-laws address was a pain in the _ _ _ _ too! they live on County Road XXX - it took me awhille to figure it out as well.

the strange part - my Nuvi DID recognize CR

Whatever way it is saved in the GPS I guess

We have friends that live in the country as well. Took a while to find a way to enter their address. Turns out the city name they use is not the city name that the 660 uses ... although both are correct. Instead of Google maps, we found the correct address format on my fathers Magellen, and once we did, the Nuvi accepted that city name as with no issues.

and that is why I don't use

and that is why I don't use city names.

Your Garmin is trying to do

Your Garmin is trying to do you a favor. You don't really want to go there do you? Just kidding. I've been using GPS since it was available. I've lost track of how many address it cannot find. Yes I try every variation there is to no avail. I send it to Navteq and a week later I receive an automated reply stating it will be included in the next update.

Figuring out the road naming convention

Sounds like Alabama... You could always browse the map on your Nüvi in the area you're interested in, and tap a few addresses on those county roads to see exactly how it's given. Looking outside Cullman, AL in MapSource, I found, for example, "Cr-1163".

Hey! I was in Cullman in May.

Hey! I was in Cullman in May. That was our first trip using my new nüvi 200. Drove to Hanceville from Fredericksburg VA via WV, KY, TN, NC, and GA. Gave the GPSr a good workout.

Depends on the State

Sometimes the roads have a prefix - sometimes not. In TX most of the time you have to use CR I have found. In ks, use the numbers alone. I don't know if it is because of the post office, state or the person who worked on the map for that state - but usually (for me) it has been a state wide convention.

North Carolina is pretty

North Carolina is pretty bad, I have found that I have to use NC as well.

You can file a report with

You can file a report with NAVTEQ to have the road name switched to the correct name.

http://www.navteq.com and click on "MAP REPORTER"

It takes a long time for the change to be verified and then you have to wait for Garmin to release a new map with the change. I waited about a year to get confirmation from NAVTEQ that the change was verified. Also Garmin verified they have it now and it should be available in the next map update. So expect around a 3 year waiting period - 2 years if you are lucky.

Here in Colorado...

... you use the CR also, but in MapSource it is tagged as CR-75.... the Nuvi keyboard hides the dash on the number keyboard.... took me a few tries before I noticed that, and it doesn't work without the dash. Found that and it worked fine.

Hi Zecpull,

I got my Nüvi 670 about 10 months ago and wasn't able to find an address in FL that had a "NW" in the street address. I even went to Google Earth and was told no such address existed.

So, affter reading these posts, I fired up my 670 and this time I omitted the "NW" in the street name and "WHAMMO" when the address came up it had the NW in the street name. Then I did the same thing in Google Earth and "WHAMMO" when the address came up it also had the NW in the street name.

Thank you for the knowledge... smile smile smile

Regards.

What hill?

The one just past the creek.

PS - I used to live in Montana... doesn't get much more rural than that. We didn't have GPS back then... doesn't matter since they never made a saddle mount anyway... wink

No equestrian vehicles, either

Just as well... They don't have any equestrian vehicles for the display, either.
