Update for Unread Posts

I've installed an update to the "Unread Posts" feature this evening.

The functionality is pretty much the the same, but the screen layout has changed to display the forum for each topic and show the topic's full title.

JM

Thank!

Thanks JM for the recent update, really useful and worthy one. Nice to be on this great site!

Me too.....once I figured out that the "default" message read during an "unread messages" scan IS the new messages!

Oddly enough, I don't think that THIS thread showed up on "unread" this morning.

Miss poi recently switched phones, so we did some testing on the new smartphone. The new format works a lot better on the Palm Centro. smile

Works very well on the iPod touch.

Unread Messages only

Same here, it's easier for me to navigate this way, rather than trying to figure out which ones have updated since the last time I looked (5 minutes ago).

Nice Job

If you click on the "Unread posts" link under your name or at the bottom of the screen, you will get the unread posts screen. Then just click on the thread title that you want to read and you will be taken to the posts in that thread that you haven't read.

I like it

I'm still dying here on a very slow dial up connection....spent most of the day catching up on the unread posts..41 pages

Jon, would it be feasible to have a check box set up, allowing more than one unread msg to be "skipped" at a time?

Not a big deal, just a suggestion for enhancement

Right now, I'm working on a way to hide selected forums from the unread posts lists. This will let you filter out forums that don't match your interests.

Skip checkboxes may be a possibility after the hide feature is implemented.

If I understand it correctly..........
At the bottom of a page of the "unread posts" listing is an item "Mark all posts read".......
SO
You fetch up the unread list, read only those you are interested in and then mark everything else as read. That, in effect, "skips" everything that you have not visited.

That would solve your problem, no ??

P.S. This is not a per page operation. When it says "Mark ALL...." it means ALL!

OK, my (so called) brain may be playing tricks on me again but......

It seems that before the update, when I displayed an Unread Posts list, the threads that I had visited before were shown in a slightly different color.........maybe.....???

I for one would hate to see check boxes added. That would double the number of clicks for those of us who like to skip as we go and therefore never have to go to the next page (everything moves up).

"Skip" Boxes

bentbiker wrote:

Mmmm...don't think you understand the function of the proposed boxes......that are already there BTW.

If you don't mark any of the boxes, it works exactly like it did before.
And if you DO mark the boxes, it is a permanent setting; you don't have to do it again every time you see the list.

And just for grins........
If 12 messages are displayed and there is a second page and you only want to read 2, the min. number of clicks required to get to the second page is 3. Skipping the 10 that you don't care about requires about 12 clicks, assuming the second page is full.
(Not counting the "back" button where required).

It's not me that doesn't understand. There are no skip checkboxes to allow multiple skips with a single skip button click, and you already pointed out in an earlier post that they aren't necessary because of the option to mark all forums as read.

Honestly, I'm not trying to be stubborn here; you really have me confused. What exactly is it that you don't like or would hate to see ??
That's the part that I don't understand.
Maybe I'm just dense.

Well, the original suggestion by Ismonop was to create checkboxes alongside each post listed in Unread Posts. A reader could then put check marks in all boxes he wished to skip instead of just clicking on the skip button associated with an individual post. Then all checked posts would be eliminated with a single click of a skip button.

You responded to Ismonop's post by saying:

ka1167 wrote:

SO

I agreed with your assessment that somebody wanting to do a wholesale skip can do so just as you described. I even started to quote you and agree with your position, but I left that out. I, personally, would prefer to hit the skip but for each post and see them disappear immediately rather than doing it as a two-step process of checkboxes and then skipping all at once. Until this very moment, I couldn't understand anyone wanting to add steps to the process; I just now realized that is because Ismonop said he's on a dial up connection and presumably each press of the skip button causes a tedious delay. Again, your suggestion solves that.

Then, you did an about-face on me and said I didn't understand to value of such checkboxes (which you said already exist).

I can only assume that although I had included a quote of Ismonop's suggestion, you somehow thought I was suggesting that JM's forum preference checkboxes not be implemented. I don't think your response to Ismonop's original post could have been referring to those same preference checkboxes, but . . .

Just for some info JM, seen where you tried the site on your palm centro, so i thought about the small screens etc, so I have a palm tx pda and tried it and it can be read with the pda real good, so now all i got to do is find wifi and when in the mountains on vac can keep up to date. Should be fun.

As usual, you are correct!
Seems to have been caused by an unfortunate sequence of messages and a slight lack of quoting in the right places........and at least one brain that has seen slightly more than 60 summers!

What kind of motorcycle would that be?

Yes, that's where I ended up.
I would go back and see why but it's late and I'm tired and it just really doesn't matter.

Cheers.
