On Star GPS

Had a demo the other day of On Star GPS. It was well done on almost all the issues that that are lacking on portable GPS. The yearly costs are relatively high.

Well, that's an excellent "teaser" !!!

How about a quick summary or reference to find out more. Where/who did the demo. that you saw?

I had OnStar free for a year when I bought my Impala and never used it once. When the year was up, if I remember right, there was two or three tiers of service. Again, if I remember right, the level that would get you things like finding motels and restaurants was over 30 dollars a month. The only thing that impressed me about their service was when a car was stolen about three blocks from my house and the police dispatcher called OnStar and she radioed where the car was traveling to the patrol cars and they all converged on the stolen car about 12 miles from where it was stolen.

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

On Star

Demo was from so Phoenix to Scottsdale, about 30 miles through the heart of town. You call a real person at On Star and give them your destination. They download the route to your radio. The turn by turn instructions are reported in plenty of time to react and were very accurate.
I believe the cost for that level of service was around $199/yr. You do get more than gps though.

OnStar turn by turn

Rode in a car going to CES (las Vegas) from the Phoenix area. The owner used the turn by turn navigation feature on OnStar. The vehicle did not have a stand-a-lone nav. system. Worked very well. Later in checking OnStar's site, it appears this feature cost an additional $100/yr over the base Safe & Sound plan but it's only available on 07 & 08 veh. He would call OnStar with destination, a route was then downloaded to the vehicle. If he got off-route, it appeared the system would phone in and new instructions given.
