Nuvi 680: I miss the TomTom's display (but that's all)

Am I missing something?

I'm sort of stunned at the lack of status information on the display on the Nuvi 680 compared to the TomTom or my previous GPS software I used on my PDA (Pocketmap Navigator).

I admit that I took for granted that the Garmin would have a lot of info on the display. And I'm not talking about the display on the Nuvi that shows current MPH, stop time, moving time, etc. When I found that I thought, "THERE it is!" But that screen's information is actually pretty useless to me. "Max speed" on trip? "Average speed?" Stop time? Moving time? Huh?

Is anyone else out there as puzzled that Garmin doesn't have this? I miss having all of the status information right there, including MPH, remaining time, remaining distance, current time, arrival time, speed and direction. It also had an arrow pointing in the direction of the next turn. It was helpful having all of that.

I'm really just wanting to know if I'm missing something and I just haven't discovered it?? All I have with this one is arrival time and "turn in...".

Thanks for any insights.

Keep looking

Many of those features are there, I'm not familiar with the 680 but my 260 has many of the ones you mentioned.

Hint keep your finger (several seconds) on main screen over different corners of the screen and more stuff will be revealed.

All the info can be found on

All the info can be found on the secondary screen by pressing the lower left hand corner of the screen.

Could be me, but the TOMTOM

Could be me, but the TOMTOM XLS screen that I was just looking at online seemed a little cluttered making the map smaller.

User config setting would be nice

I think user preference settings of what items to show on the main screen plus WHERE to show them would be great. An option of Right, Left and Top/Bottom would allow each user to customize things how they like it.

I also find the TT screen cluttered looking and the map rather short. Personally, I think a better use of a widescreen display would be to put the status stuff in a vertical column which would allow the tallest map display possible. I'm more interested in what's in front than what's on either side. Others will prefer the wide display.

I admit that I'm thoroughly spoiled. My first GPS was a laptop using Delorme's Street Atlas with GPS. Total user config on what to show on a 15" screen. I'm thrilled with the power and ease of use of something that fits in my shirt pocket like the Nuvi 350. But I sometimes miss the incredible flexibility of a laptop system.

get bigger pockets

What was that about "having your cake"? grin

This is my feeling about the TT also. It just looks very busy. I prefer the clean look of the Garmin. After all, my car already has a speedometer. grin

If they included everything that I've seen people ask for on the main screen the map would have to be on a secondary screen. rolleyes

Maybe omit the MP3 button?

Good replies all.

I agree the wide open screen on the Garmin is nice. I do wonder though, why they gave such prime real estate to the MP3 button.

???

Now THAT is a button I would like to have the option to change into something else.

Don't use it. Have an iPod.

I dont care for the MP3 button either

Ever try to get back to the map from MSN? It takes 3-6 clicks. I would like to have a MSN icon instead of the MP3 icon, replaced by Back to Map icon once you are at another screen.
Fact/

My nuvi 260...

... doesn't have MSN, but I can get to the map view from anyplace else in 2 touches. Hold the "Back" button until the menu shows (2 seconds), then touch "View Map".
