Just a wild guess but the first thing I would suggest is do NOT plug the card in while the unit is ON.

In general, the unit should be OFF (and not just standby) to install or remove the card.

If your One has a slot but came without a card then the unit boots from the 'internal' memory. When you place a card in the slot the unit boots from the card.

If you have POI's but do not have any maps/data saved on the card the unit will not boot at all.
