Hi subunesss.

Any city with tall buildings and skyscrapers do cut down on the satellite reception, however, the GPSr units have improved slightly in that regard.

If the C530 has "Simulation Mode" you can simulate your trip, and write down the route before you get in your car. At least if you lose the satellite signal temporarily, you'll have the directions to refer to in hand, until you pick up the satellite again, once you're in the clear.

You can also get directions from Google and print them, before you leave.

Being an ex New Yorker, make sure you stop at a hot dog cart with the umbrella and have a few of those delicious "Sabrett hot dogs" with mustard and sauerkraut.

NYC experience

Yup, it's true. While in Midtown you will sometimes experience loss of reception. It was kinda funny because the GPS was showing my car floating from street to street even though I was stopped.

While using my C330 in the city it helped using the external antenna. I have fewer problems with the nuvi 250w in the city. If I do lose the signal then it’s for a short time.

nuvi 360 in NYC

have used the nuvi360 in NYC a couple of times ... very little problem with lost reception - worked better than I expected ... after reading about the potential problems on this site.

c550 and c580

I live in NYC, I had c550 and now got c580, never had problems anywhere in NYC

Satellite Reception in NYC

Hi subunesss,
I live in Brooklyn and drive to Manhattan almost every day. I had a Garmin 660 and now have a 760 and I've had little or no trouble with the tall buildings. Every once in a while the car symbol will wiggle side to side or drift a little when stopped at a light but not enough to throw you off course. I did try walking around the city with it and other then a little drift it still got me where I wanted to go.

Have fun on your visit the city is great.

because of teh proximity of some of teh streets to the highways, I've noticed it will on occasion these devices will think you're on one that you're not. so be aware of that and it's ALWAYS good to have a map in your travels
