POI still confused

Maybe it's old age, or maybe just a mental block, but still looking to understand the theory.

When you turn your unit on, there is a "where to" option. You press "where to" and it takes you to a second page with various other options i.e "address", "food", "extra", "favorites", etc.

I take it that each of these options (or categories) contain POIs that are preloaded into the GPS unit and are all located in one file somewhere on the unit. I also take it that different POIs appear under each option depending on which city you are in (i.e lodgings).

Can these preloaded POIs be edited or can some of them be deleted?

When you add "custom POIs", do these files get loaded to the main POI file that is preloaded, or to a different and separate file?

Where do the custom POIs appear in the "where to" section" Under favorites? Under extras? or, in a separate category that is created and appears on the screen when you load them?

thanks

Custom POIs = Extras

Yes, Custom POIs get loaded under the extras category.

No you can not edit or delete pre-loaded stuff from the database.

The preloaded POI's can't be edited or deleted. The custom POI's that we get from this great site will be located under Where to, Extra's, Custom POIs. When loading the custom POI's, they go to a separate file other than the preloaded files

Now I understand

All the reading that I've done in this forum regarding custom POIs was about how to create them etc.

Now I understand the theory. Thanks, everything is now crystal clear.

This forum is great, and everyone is so helpful. Once I get used to using the unit, hopefully over time, I'll be in a position to help others as well.

I'm retired and my wife and I will be spending the winter down south. We will be doing a lot of traveling with our 5th wheel. At some point, I will be looking to create a custom POI that includes places where RVers can legally stop and park overnight during travel days between one destination and another, ie Rest Areas, Walmarts, etc (mainly western provinces and states). Eventually, I'll also look at creating some POIs regarding things to see and do along the way during an RVers travels.

Again, thanks for the help.

Try the Combined Rest Areas POI file

Try the Combined Rest Areas POI file - it (hopefully) includes most (99 %) of the Rest Areas, Welcome Centers, Service Plazas and Turnouts along Interstates and some major US Highways in the lower 48. It also, in most cases, gives you what facilities are available at each location (including RV Dumping Areas). If you decide to use it read the tutorial which goes along with the file !
I have used it for some major excursions and found it very helpful !

Called "Rest Areas Combined" under list of POI files !

Happy Travelling !
