Can the 660 show current long/lat position? If so, please explain.

Yes, go to the menu screen, and hit the arrow down, and you will see an ICON for coordinates. That will give you where you current are at.

Squatch

Can you also just tap the car icon?

On my nüvi 200 you can tap the car icon and it will show you the current location in lat/long & elevation. Does the 660 do the same?

How to tell the current long/lat on a 660/680

tetyson wrote:

Hitting the car won't do it on the 6xx models (that's for when you want to save that location as a favorite).

From the main menu page where it says where to, view map, travel kit. Look up in the upper left top of the menu. You will see the green bars and right next to it there is a weird looking blue icon. Touch it or the green bars. It will tell you what satelites you are getting plus your altitude and lat/long. Just hit the screen again and you're back to the menu screen

That's one improvement...

That's one improvement in the 200 series. My 260 just tap the car and get current lon/lat/elev and it asks if you want to save it. Efficient... smile

Long/Lat on 660

From the main menu, tap on the signal strength icon (upper-left corner) and you will see your coordinates (among other things).

Wish the 350 did it.

I do this on the 350 quite often. Tap the car, tap Save. It doesn't show the coordinates, but it will save the coordinates to a Favorite. When you select that Favorite later, it shows the coordinates. The other way is to select Where To > My Locations > My Current Location and either read off the coordinates there or save them. If you just want current coordinates, tapping the signal strength meter on the main screen is the least amount of clicks from the map or navigation mode. But if you're driving and want to remember a location for later, the tap car & tap save is the quickest. Instead of entering a name, if you just tap save it will name it as 001, 002, 003 etc. I edit the name to something meaningful later when I'm not driving.

I think it is quite unusual to see the differences between the different units. I would have expected to see more consistency in the OS on units from the same manufacturer. Different feature sets, sure. But simple UI inconsistencies from model to model seems like each one has it's own OS instead of having them all share a common core and turning on/off features to match the hardware. I'm probably taking too much of a "system" view to a consumer gadget.

How do you get Lat/Lon from Favorites?

Garmin does learn though. After messing it up on the 680; the 760 took it one step further when you tap the vehicle icon. You get the coordinates, elevation, nearest address, nearest intersection, and POI buttons to find the nearest Hospital, Police, Fuel from your location. Check out the screen shot here

However I can't see my coordinates on the 680, 760 from My Favorites the way you describe for the 350. Does anyone know how to get the Lat-Lon from a My Favorites points? confused

Depends on if it's a point or address

Occasionally, the 350 will save an address when I tap the car. Depends on how close I am to a known address, I guess. But when I open the Favorite later, it still has the coordinates, too. Funny how the 760 is more sophisticated, but doesn't do that.

If you use GeePeeEx Editor to open the current.GPX file it will have both the address and coordinates saved for that favorite, though. And you can then save to csv or gpx format for POI use.

nüvi 760 Does Save Also

The nüvi 760 also saves the waypoint the same as described for the nüvi 350. When the location is saved from the map, it saves coordinates that are displayed in Favorites. When saved from finding an address, the address is displayed in Favorites. Nothing was lost during the 'sophistication' process.

This struck me too. It's very odd, isn't it? I would love to know why they've taken to re-inventing the wheel all the time.

Really? When I display a point on my 760 from My Favorites it isn't showing anything but the name and the buttons Go, Back, Show Map, Edit. What am I doing wrong? Basically the same as if I open up a POI. Can you get Lat-Lon off of your loaded POI's too?

I went back to the device and saved some loctions by touching the map and saving the location. I checked the locations in Favorites and did not see coordinates as I have in the past. I went to some of the favorites that I had saved in the past and there they were, both Lat and Lon for the locations that had been previously saved.

I was in the downstairs of the house where I cannot aquire signal, so I went outside. When outside, and receiving satellite signal, I was able to mark the map and see the coordinates after saving the location.

I also found that if I happened to place the arrow on street location that displayed an address, the device would save the address and not the coordinates.

I cannot see the coordinates for the system POIs or the custom POIs.

Don't think you can

I don't think you can unless you convert your favorites file, which means you would have to save it as your favorite, go home to your PC and convert the file. I know I can't do it on my 680, that's why I hit the strenght meter and it tells you the information right away.
