Garmin Bean Bag Mount location

After reading all the positive remarks over this mount and against my inner feelings that this thing looks pretty ugly I went ahead and ordered one when Dell had the super price of $26 with free shipping.

I must say that I ended up liking this a lot. I now mount the GPS on top of my steering column in front of the speedometer. It sits way back under the dash with no problem of vibration or sliding around or getting the satellites signals and I can view it easily between the steering wheel. It also helps with the temptation of me from fiddling with the unit while driving ( Like we all "AGREE" during boot up). I usually have it in Map View so I can see the GPS reported speed no problem since the speedometer is blocked. Now if only Garmin would allow us to select Speed instead of Arrival time when we have a route being shown. wink

I don't even have the urge to try and hide the unit now when I park because of its location being so stealthy.

selection

It would be nice to select things like that, its nice to know when you may arrive but I would like to choose between the other functions when I get the hankering.

I agree

I agree, I would prefer to have my speed showing instead of my arrival time. Or at least be able to toggle between the two.

Glad you like your new mount.... I would take the Nuvi with you or hide it, better safe than sorry. Just to much of a gamble to take...

Just got the friction mount yesterday

I also got in on the great deal from Dell. It arrived yesterday. Going on a trip tomorrow. It will be interesting how it will work on my Wrangler dash. I also agree that the ability to toggle the between arrival time and speed would be one of the main things I would want changed, or better yet the ability to switch out a split screen or to customize the readout.

No Armorall...

I have read somewhere that the Friction mount doesnt like armorall..I made sure I wiped my dash dry before I put it up there. I love my Bean bags..
On the Speed instead of ETA..I agree...I Know Garmin can do it..My Etrex has a screen you can choose what Data and How many..Speed..ETA..Elevation..Time of Day. I wonder if the Off Road and On road people speak to each other at Garmin..

mounts

Sorry if this comes in twice I hit the wrong key. I have the adjustable mount from garmin and I use it with my 660 in my jeep wrangler over the letf heat vent on the top of the dash by the gage cluster. It works great cant wait to try it in the motor home

If I can find it...

If I can find it, I'll provide a link to a report discussing how bad ArmorAll is for vinyl. One of the ingredients actually dries out the vinyl and causes premature cracking. There are other similar products out there that do protect vinyl, but ArmorAll isn't one of them.

Regardless, even the good stuff causes the dash board to be too slippery for the beanbag mount, which I have and love! (Admit it; you didn't think I'd bring it back around to the topic, did you!)

Slippery dash

I don't have (haven't even seen) the friction mount, so I don't know what's on the bottom. But, if your dash is slippery from ArmorAll or other silicone products, would it help to put a piece of that waffle-looking foam rubber shelf liner material (how's that for a technical description?) underneath the mount? You know, the stuff that comes in rolls and is sold in kitchen gadget stores? (This stuff: http://www.antonline.com/p_6B5300-NX_382169.htm) It looks like it would cling to just about any surface.

"waffle-looking foam rubber shelf liner material" -- very nicely done! I would have never come up with that description. I used the bean bag mount for years with my StreetPilot and it works fine. Over the last few months, I did notice that the mount began slipping off the dash more regularly so I bet that Armorall story is true. I do recall using a silicone-based product on a few occasions in recent years. That waffle stuff would have been a good workaround!

Sticky pads

You can also buy Sticky pads ...that feel very much like the original backing material You can get a pack of 3 for a few bucks..they are much thinner. My wife got me some last Christmas she thought they would hold my Radar detector..I didnt trust them and used Velcro

Can I adapt an older mount?

I have an bean bag from my 2610 series. How can I make it work with my nuvi 680?

thx,
Jen

Dell

I ordered the bean bag mount last night on Dell. They are up to $29 with free shipping. The thing won't ship until January 10. I just hope it does ship on that date. I ordered a laptop from them in July and it didn't ship until September!

friction mounts

I have both the bean bag and the spider like 3 legged mounts. They both work well. I like the bean bag because it is really non slip. It is a little bulkier than the spider. I'd buy either again.

Beanbag dashboard mount

I want one. Is the beanbag the only thing I need or are there any other (optional) pieces/parts that I need or should get? I have a StreetPilot C530. If I get the beanbag, do I just plop the 530 on top of it and it'll just sit there and be safe? I guess what I'm asking is, how does the 530 attach to the beanbag?

with no problems. It comes with the ball mount. Part number: 010-10908-00. Bought two from Amazon.com. One for me & one for my son.

I received my bean bag mount today, about two weeks earlier than anticipated.
I really like it. As bad as I drive, it stayed right where I put it on the dashboard.

3 legged mounts

My son got me the Garmin spider leg mount for Christmas and I am well satisfied with it.It was 450 miles to his home so on the return trip I got to try it out and it done well.It came with the power cord and a much lower base to hold the GPS.I liked the lower profile. On the trip to his home my window suction mount lost its grip and my unit fell to the dash and by luck no damage.Right then I knew I was going to change the mount type I had. My son already had the solution.I have had the unit since SEPT and driven a lot of miles using the suction mount with no problems.

mounts

I use the window mount on a disk that is placed in front of the tack on my SUV's and also on the Motorhome. It is out of the way and pretty well hidden from the outside. Both the C550 and Nuvi 370 work the same way.

window mount on a disk

I had been thinking about doing the same thing but not really happy on attaching something to the dash that I might not be able to get off later.

Garmin beanbag mount

This past Sunday night at 9:30 I ordered the beanbag mount from amazon.com for $27.78 (including shipping). They shipped it on Sunday and I received it on Wednesday - not bad service and not a bad price.
I have a 2003 Honda CRV and the mount with our C530 sits perfectly nicely and stablely on the dash. I'm completely satisfied with the product.
BTW, I have no idea in the world if "stablely" is a word.

I just ordered a bean bag

I just ordered a bean bag mount as well.

Being an RVer, we travel a lot. The bean bag will allow me to conceal the GPS better.

Those who take the GPS with them but leave their mounts in the vehicle in plain view for thieves to see are leaving themselves open to smashed windows by thieves who may think that the GPS is tucked under the seat or something.

I Agree

I highly recommend the bean bag mount as well. You can place it wherever you like and it's easy to move and hide when needed.

You can get the Garmin Bean

You can get the Garmin Bean Bag mount at Fry's for the regular price of $24.99 online as well as in the store and sometimes it is on sale.
