Tinkering with GPS while driving

This is a dangerous practice but I always find myself tinkering with the GPS unit while driving (ie clicking on the MP3 player and adjusting volume, checking the trip computer or even zooming out on the map).
Anyone else do this? I need to quit doing that.
Driving and Tinkering
The nüvi 660 has a safe setting that disables the more difficult tasks for driving. Of course it is up to you to turn this feature on or off. I do not find the nüvi any more or less a distraction than the stereo or my cell phone.
tinkering while driving
i too tinker and prob should not-
but I love my GPS altho i have only had it several weeks-
I have a remote which seems to make some things easier when driving- but I do love my GPS!
lov'n my GPS!
I find myself doing this
I find myself doing this too. It has become a bad habit, but I will admit I want to see the trip computer too and see how accurate my speed is.
yeah, its bad
I constantly tinker with mine, looking at the map or viewing my speed. I really have to be careful, its just too easy to get caught up on the gps screen instead of the road, especially in slow moving traffic!
hehehehe
I don't mind that fact that I tinker a bit, it is when Jon tinkers with it while I am driving and trying to use it that sometimes bugs me.
He has this obsession with seeing how many satellites connections we have and that is not going to help me make my turn if it is coming up soon:) I like to see the map and occasionally I will flip pages to see if I have time to stop for something on my way to something that I want to be on time for.
I think a new rule should be established, when I am driving, the toy is under my control.
Hey it works for the radio, when Jon drives we listen to NPR and when I drive we listen to music.
.
I think it's the same as
I think it's the same as cellphone usage while driving. If you can do two things at once, feel free. If you're swerving lanes or running over old people...you probably shouldn't play/talk on your GPS/cellphone while you're driving...

As long as we breathe, we will continue to tinker. I even did it today. Slow traffic I won't tinker since so many of the World's Finest Drivers Cut in front. I feel more comfortable tinkering while driving about 70 - 80 MPH when I am no where near anyone - and when I am at a light.

and i thought that skydiving and scubadiving with a gps was bad lol
Safe mode
I did have the safe mode enabled before, but it's somewhat useless. As soon as I try to do a complex operation, it immediately prompts me to disable safe mode. That's not much of a deterrent. I would prefer it stay in safe mode until I came back to a stop and could then make the more complicated changes. However, I suppose that would really suck on the interstate as even the passenger would not be able to use it either.

Yes I Do!
I keep saying I am going to stop but yes I find myself doing the exact samething. Especially trying to find a radio station to play my nuvi through my car stereo. Or even using it to make a call.
Made me Smile
This thread made me smile. It is like one of those "You know you are obsessed when..." threads.
For instance you know you are obsessed with your GPS when you are checking for how good of satellite connections you have while bungee jumping!

Tinker while you go...
It's difficult not to. I've found that the menu system of the Nuvii 660 is easy to use while driving on the interstate, but I try to avoid it in city traffic. My friends all laugh when they get in my truck - iPod, GPS, Ham Radio, cell phone, the list goes on. At least they are all still willing to ride with me!
I have not turned on my nuvi
I have not turned on my nuvi 660 disable while driving setting, but I just might have to. I do my best not to dial on my cell phone while driving, I should do the same with my GPS. I have found that anything more than a few clicks and I start drifting out of my lane.
I have not turned on my nuvi
I have not turned on my nuvi 660 disable while driving feature because undoubtedly I will try to adjust my Nuvi while driving and then have to manage the extra step of turning this feature off!!! (ha ha)
I had a TTGO910 that I returned to get my Nuvi 660 and the one thing I do miss is the remote control that came with the TTGO910.
Wow, a remote. Great for the
Wow, a remote. Great for the back seat drivers!
Yikes, Me Too
Amongst my constant tinkering with my garmin nuiv 660, my cell phone, in-car radio, cb radio and DVD system -- I am amazed I am still alive!!!!

You are all looking at it wrong
I too spend much time tinkering but look at the problem set in this manner: The GPS which is mounted on the dash or winsheild is directly within line of sight of the road, so you still have "Eyes On" in a sense. This is much safer than unfolding one of those impossible maps that cover the entire winshield and keep your eyes unfocused on tiny print while you try to figure out where you are.
The bluetooth connection is absolutely safer as you talk without using your hands or take your eyes off the road while you locate your phone or a number.
The traffic alerts are much more convenient than scanning through radio stations trying to get that sparce report of a traffic backup.
Well, I have completely convinced myself that I am a much safer driver now that I have my NUVI, this argument however, has yet to work on my wife.

Stupid Question
How do I delete a post when I accidently post the same one twice? (without reposting something stupid like this)

Wish List: Nuvi should accept common voice commands
I also tinker with my GPS unit while driving and my wife sitting next to me always tells me that from next time, we are not carrying the GPS on our trip. The NUVI solved an important thing for me which is handsfree calls. Now, it should also solve this last thing which is to accept or allow customized voice commands for common functions ( shortcuts ) like open MP3 player, Increase volume, increase brightness. Nuvi 360 already has the mic built into it and it already supports TTS. It should add the ASR in the next version to even allow spelling the address by just the voice which means no touching.
