KNA-G510 Map Updates

Does anyone know the correct map update software I need?

I have a G510 I bought about 1.5 years ago and I would like to update the maps. I found the "SD data card, City Navigator NT, North America Part Number: 010-10679-00" on the Garman website but it doesn't specifically say this item is for upgrading the map software on the G510. I also read in another place on the web that this software couldn't be used to update existing software.

Does anyone know the correct map update software I need?

Thanks,

Stretch

I have the latest map and

I have the latest map and I'm actually looking to sell it. I only used it for a couple of weeks. Let me know if you want to buy it. I think it is City Navigator NT V2008. I can sell it to you for a good price since I'm selling my nav unit and will not have any use for it.

Even 5 Min is used

Once it has been loaded to a unit it is no longer able to be loaded to another unit. You will need another unlock code, and that costs the same as a new Disk. Now to answer the First person, you need Map version 2008 and that is the latest Software...

You don't need a disc for

You don't need a disc for the KNA-G510. You need a SD card with the map on it. The SD card does not require a code. The Garmin units that require discs do need codes though. I know what I am talking about.

The part number you have

The part number you have above is correct. All you have to do is put it into the SD card slot of your unit and turn on your car. It is plug and play. I did this and my unit was updated with the latest map. The reason why Kenwood doesn't worry about having a code for this update is that the map is only updated when the SD card is in your unit. So if you take the card out, it will display the old map until you insert the card back in. I have pictures as well.

I'm interested

I'm interested in purchasing your SD card. Let me know your contact info and how much you're selling it for.

I also own this kna-g510.

I also own this kna-g510. But I made the mistake of buying the garmin update DVD which is NOT FOR "v8 NT" . This dvd is MAP UPDATE 2008 CITY NAVIGATOR NORTH AMERICA NT product (note the missing v8 before NT), part number k190-10143-00

At first look and use of the dvd’s setup.exe, it is NOT compatible with the kenwood g510

However I am not so quick to believe that and I do have some troubleshooting skills and also, I have:
1. a laptop with a minib usb cable -this SUCCESSFULLY connects to my gps unit - the g510 does prompt me if I would like to go into USB direct access mode

2.on my laptop, a copy of the garmin 2008 DVD including 3 IMG files totaling 2.3 gigs in size.
gmappromA.img, gmappromL.img and gmappromU.img - A.img being the largest file at just over a gig and the L file is just under a gig. The U file is 400,000K

3. on my laptop, a backup copy of my kna-g510 's garmin folder and contents – main files there are gmapprom.img that’s close to 996000 kb and a fs_image.ver file which appears to hold just this code “006-D0494-00”

4. The ACTIVATION KEY from the DVD (which might be useless/unneeded or not)

5. a SD 2gig card I can use with my g510 (though I would hope that my minib cable is good enough)

HERE IS WHAT I DONT HAVE AND WOULD LIKE TO GET:
a. a full directory listing of what that garmin SD chip has - including hidden files and file sizes. I AM NOT ASKING for the actual files, just the directory’s LISTING info.

b. to hear from any one who have successfully converted /hacked /changed the CITY NAV NT non v8 files into the g510's required NT v8 files

c. or threads, links to discussion on this exact question - converting the files or using the contents of the update DVD to upgrade a kenwood/garmin unit.

the most specific question I have is about the need to UNLOCK the dvd's files, or is this as simple as renaming them?

Sorry for the long note, but I thought it best to be complete in the info I have and need.

thanks harry

I would expect that card (ie 010-10679-00) to contain GMAPSUPP.IMG and GMAPSUPP.UNL. The 25 digit code in the GMAPPSUPP.UNL will be related to the serial no. of the card. (Which is why copying these cards does you no good)

I would expect that if you plugged it into your Kna-G510, and hit "Map Info", it would list "City Navigator North America V8" (from the unit's GMAPPROM.IMG) and "City Navigator North America NT V2008" (from the card). You would not really want both of them selected at the same time!

The basic idea, is to use the 'voucher number' of the DVD in concert with the Serial No. of the G510 to generate a 25 digit unlock code. This seems to be the process that the 'Unlock Wizard' does on your behalf, though you can also do it manually at http://My.garmin.com.

I'm guessing that the DVD contains a lot of 'loose' .img files that Mapsource can merge together to form a GMAPSUPP.IMG - though Garmin might not have taken that approach with this particular DVD. In any case, those three files you spotted (GMAPPROMA, GMAPPROML, GMAPPROMU) are presumably ready-built and you can choose the one you want - copy it to GMAPPROM.IMG on the G510. (A="All", L="Lower", U="Upper" states...I'm guessing). You would then need the 25 digit unlock code entering in GMAPPROM.UNL to make it unlock on the unit.

I don't know if that DVD contains a copy of Mapsource or Mapinstall for helping you with the installation process - I'm sure it'll contain one or the other though. Whichever way you tackle it, you need to end up with either a replacement GMAPPROM.IMG/GMAPPROM.UNL on the G510 or a GMAPSUPP.IMG/GMAPSUPP.UNL on a card...the contents of the .UNL file being related to the DVD's serial number and the G510's.

Just don't lose your original files and unlock code!!

I have this same question and this is what I have found.. notice the difference in the last two numbers of the part #... (copied from another of my posts before finding this thread)

I have City Navigator NT, North America v7 loaded right now. I have been searching for v8 to no avail. I have found update 2008 all over the place but cant seem to find "v8". Also, on garmin's website for "kenwood updates" it lists the part # as 010-10679-10 . The closest I can find is 010-10679-00. Is this going to be the same software or is it going to be reciever specific?
