EasyGPS vs MapSource

Isn't EasyGPS one way to go around to avoid the I-cannot-get-MapSource-for-free-from-Garmin ordeal?
That's their statement: "EasyGPS is the fast and easy way to transfer waypoints, routes and tracks between your computer and your Garmin, Magellan or Lowrance GPS. EasyGPS lists all of your waypoints on the left side of the screen and shows a plot of your GPS data on the right. Use EasyGPS to back up and organize your GPS data, print maps or load new waypoints onto your GPS for your next hike or geocaching adventure.
EasyGPS works with every popular handheld GPS receiver and it is 100% FREE!"

What's the collective's thinking about it?

last call

Just bumping up the thread, seeing lots of frustration around for not getting free MapSource disk the easy way... hard to believe nobody's heard about EasyGPS before.

Not impressed

I tried EasyGPS... I tried editing some waypoints and the dialog didn't include address and phone number fields. Sure enough, after I used it to edit current.gpx on my StreetPilot c580 (smart me, didn't backup first), it deleted all the address/phone data from my favorites, leaving me with a title and coordinates.

Evidently it doesn't support those Garmin extensions to GPX.

Ditto

I also thought EasyGPS was going to be a big help but had the same problem of needing to redo all my Favorites after it removed half the data from them. It's easier to maintain a custom POI file and load that on with my other POIs. Either a CSV or even pretend everything is a geocache and use GSAK to create a GPX file. GSAK keeps a lot of extra data and you can have multiple lines of description included with each item, at least on my nuvi 750. Of course you have to ignore some of the field names and use them for other data for that to work.

variety of tools

there are a variety of freeware tools that will transfer data to/from a GPS. The reason most of them are not as useful as Mapsource, is that Mapsource is not just a list manager, it is a map and the visual representation of waypoints is valuable.

If you have other mapping tools like DeLorme, you can probably combine a freeware tool and the map to get close to Mapsource, but you have to use more tools to get the job done.

Mapsource

I called and they are sending Mapsource to me for free. I didn't think it would be useful until I discovered it can setup routes with multiple waypoints and transfer them to the 750. That's very useful. I'll see what else it can do...

Man I miss not being able to

Man I miss not being able to do routes on my 650.

i have used easygps with my

i have used easygps with my streetpilot 2720. it does what it says. easygps is quite easy to work with and converts to a bunch of different formats. that's important since the 2720 is NOT compliant with nema or other standards other than garmin's propritary format. that makes the unit virtually worthless without a program like easygps.
as far as mapsource goes, it is pure crap. i immediately removed it from my system. if you want a copy, pm me.

I got a copy of that easygps

I got a copy of that easygps and dont know what to think of it, hadnt quite figured it out yet.
