Map Source

I purchased a Street Pilot C580 in September, and have been lurking here off and on since then. There have been several posts concerning Map source. Some people have indicated that they paid Garmin $15 for the disk, others have indicated that they got it free when they said they needed it to manage their favorites.
1) What can the Map Source program be used for if installed on your PC? All the maps are preloaded onto the device, aren't they?
2) What exactly is meant by "managing favorites?"

If you goto Piratebay.org and search for the Mapsource you want(City Select, Metroguide, or TOPO, or Others) you can download the .iso and use a program like Original CD Emulator, you can get just about All of them for Free!

Within your lurking you probably ran across the answers to your questions as well.

1) yes all the maps are installed on your device. (most instances)you'll have the same map on your computer. So, you can check out a trip prior to actually putting it on your gpsr. You can use mapsource to create poi files, or TourGuide files. You can use it to "find" places, cities, addresses etc, just like you can with your gpsr. You can create "routes" with mapsource, however you can't transfer routes or maps to your particular unit.
2)manage your favorites - you can bring your favorites from your gpsr to mapsource to view/edit and send back to the unit.

Mapsource isn't a requirement to have but nice to have it available, even if not used much.
