Cameras take pic of legal left turns

Sitting and waiting my turn to go straight, two cars made legal (green arrow) left turns in front of me. The red light camera took pics of both while they were in the intersection. It was nearly dark and the super bright flash accompanying the snapshot of the first car was directly in the eyes of the driver in the second. Seems like a very dangerous situation to me.

Now, because there is no way that the resulting pic can show the license plate (because of the angle of the vehicle at the time the pic was taken - almost side-on), a ticket cannot be sent to the owner. Result: Just a super bright, distracting (if not blinding) strobe light in the eyes of a driver doing something totally legal.

Distracting

A friend of mine said that he was hoping one of those went off in his eyes so he could run off the road and sue the city for creating a hazardous condition. I told him he could win the battle but lose the war (pretty risky).

legal left

I got one of those red light infractions but i went to court and fought the case, i took pics of the intersection and showed them that the ticket was false. they threw out the case and gave me some reimbursement for coming to court. it was a hassle but at least i didnt have to pay the 300 dollar fine.

Wow! You were lucky. How

Wow! You were lucky. How was the ticket "false"?

Nice

Nice job. More people need to do this.

it is pretty hard to fight

it is pretty hard to fight and win a red light camera ticket in NYC. The cameras they use are very clear. I have not heard fo any cameras taking pictures of cars making legal left turns.

NEW

this is something that i've heard has started in some areas in Houston. why don't they make the turning timer longer? Sometimes i feel like allowing only 4-5 people to turn when the lane is backed up is ridiculous. I guess their argument for the cameras are for safety. PROVE IT!

In Texas, the camera will

In Texas, the camera will only take your pic if you enter the intersection AFTER the light has already turned red, and it takes motion video starting 6 seconds before the light turns red through 6 seconds after the light changes to green. It would be hard to prove your case unless you were absolutely right and knew that the camera / video would prove your innocence.

Quick on the draw

All of the redlight cameras in NYC that I have seen are aimed at the back of the car. One thing that is a definite rip-off though is the very short orange light interval before it turns red. The traffic light at the intersection of Woodhaven and Cooper in Queens changes from green to red in around 5 seconds. The redlight camera there is aimed at the rear of northbound traffic on Woodhaven.

Legal Left Turns

In most states, if the left hand turning car is in the intersection when the light turns red, they have the right of way to clear the intersection even if that means going through the red light.

The only situation I can think of when they might be taking picutes is when a green arrow proeeds the green light and people are running the red light for the turn lane.

Waiting for the light to turn green

it sucks that you can only 4 cars can turn and your like at the end of the line and you have to wait for like 10mins till its your turn
