Live Chat

Would having a live chat in this forum, (if possible) defeat the purpose of having a forum in the first place?

Just curious to what you guys think.

Other forums have live chat so I don't think it would "defeat the purpose of having a forum in the first place."

Live Chat issues

The potential problem with Live Chats is that the information isn't archieved in nice clean "Topics" categories as they are with this type of forum. It makes the information much harder to find for people later on.

The way Live Chats could work is if they were scheduled by, and stuck to, very defined topics ... no side bars/tangents etc. These chats could then be left in the forum for future reading in an organized manner.

The great library of knowledge is one of the best things about this site ... I don't think we'd want to lose that.

Yeah, but it still would be

Yeah, but it still would be fun to do live chat with ppl

IRC

Many forum posts are "little nothings" from folks who need a bit of common knowledge. It's easier for them to ask than to seek. The result is lots of POI Factory members scanning an ever growing river of run-of-the-mill posts.

I believe that a chat feature could reduce the number of these low-reference-value posts and at the same time provide a new socializing feature.

My son uses an audio app (Ventrillo?) to do the same sort of thing while gaming. At the speed I type, I like the sound of real-live-chat better! Too bad the technical requirements would keep some from participating.

Chat is good.

Thank you guys, I can see

Thank you guys, I can see both forum and live chat working well together in different areas when help is needed. I appreciate the response.

Now we just need to see if it can be done. smile

heeheheheehehe

Do you mean Jon? I get a giggle every time you reference a Jim;) At this point we are not looking at adding a live chat option. Our main focus is getting the new database system up and running.

Miss Poi

Oh my, where did jim come

Oh my, where did jim come from..lol I’m so sorry Jon.

This is why jim doesn't reply to me wink hehe

I'm aboard in regards to the new database.
Thank you.

Ghost Town

I belong to a motorcycle forum with thousands of members. The live chat area is a ghost town. I would stop in to chat and not find anyone there and leave. I think live chat has lost its luster and most people don't hang out there anymore waiting for someone to show up.

Yeah, my radar detector

Yeah, my radar detector forum has a live chat, but noone is ever there...however, if ppl would go in there, then it would be ok.

Moot discussion continues:

If chat could be implemented such that Members could use the site while at the same time monitoring chat, it won't be a ghost town: everyone will (automatically) be there. If chat is walled off separately, nothing good will happen, just as you suggest.

Talk to me

I can see who is online but can't talk to them, what is the use of knowing who else is online?

good question

Maybe it's just a statistically interesting fact?

LIVE CHAT

i feel that live chat would be helpful for people who are stuck in front of the computer trying to figure things out , and would like fast response...

just my thought.

thanks

are there any web site's

are there any web site's that have free canadian maps

.

Not sure why this is in this thread, but you can check out MapCenter.

http://mapcenter.cgpsmapper.com/catalogue.php?country=37

What type of maps are you looking for? Street map, TOPO, something else?

Be advised that there may be a bunch of steps involved in loading the free maps. You'll probably have to use sendMap20 in order to load them to your GPS unit.

Live Chat

Seems to me this is just another case of people wearing blinders and not looking at the big picture.

This is a perfect tool for holding scheduled live classes, we have software writers right here on the POI-Factory what better way is there to do a release of their product then hold a question and answer live session. this is perfect for that.

How about a weekly scheduled session for newbie to learn how to make a POI taught by an experienced member? You know we are he to share the wealth, and knowlege is wealth.

Yes chat does sit empty a lot of the time, however in a scheduled manor, we can utilize this multimedia forum in another positive way for live online instruction. with the ability to open and close the chat link.

So educate yourself, after all you might learn something because you were to embarrassed to ask. Take them blinder off.
