2008 north america update free?

Hi there...I called up garmin...they didnt offer the update for free...i got my c340 in jan...since so many of u have it free...i was wondering if anyone could share their unlock codes..its really doesnt seem fair that some people have to pay for the update when others dont just because of a few months difference...

Please be kind...I am sure a lot of people will benefit from the same...thanks..

I searched the web..the european ones are free online..but not north america...

Some one please help.

Thanks

.

Not only is that illegal, but it wouldn't work anyway. The unlock codes are tied to a specific unit and can't be used on another unit.

If you bought your unit in January, you would not be eligible for a free update to the maps. You had your unit for alomost 6 months before the update came out.

I could have got mine free

But I didn't.

The update was worth every penny to me in time and aggravation I've saved using it. And so will the next one.

queston on unlock codes

MM ... just curious.

How do the unlock codes tie to a specific unit?

I installed the new DVD ... in the ordering process I don't remember where I had to specify my unit's serial number. I ordered it from ProVantage.

My laptop has a DVD reader ... not writer.

So how can it specify a specific serial number ???

Can't remember install exactly ... did it run up to Garmin in the sky to get the unlock code? Then it could tie that to the serial numb of the specific DVD.

Update Window

They told me the cutoff date was May 1. If you bought your unit prior to that, the free upgrade is not offered. I just made it with a May 2 purchase.

This could land you in a place where a GPS won't do you any good!

Yes, in fact it did.

The software gets the unlock code either from you entering it manually or from it getting it from your registration information on Garmin's servers.

It doesn't cost anything to wonder, but doubt if your going to get a taker.

It matters not...

....you won't get past the unit serial number product key verification in step one.

Just seems like an odd request

Hmm.. so you are saying it is not fair that you should have to pay for an update because you have only utilized it for 8 or 9 months? You do realize that the software is updated every 12 to 18 months right?

Asking these kind people to steal for you is NOT helping you. Having one of these people hire you for a day of construction work or burger flipping to earn the money for the update would be helping you.

The best of luck to you.

Paid for free update?

Wait a minute... You could have received the update for free but you paid for it? If you have any more of that extra money sitting around that you want to get rid of, please send it to me.

If you don't ask you don't

If you don't ask you don't get.... it's that simple... but sometimes asking gets you nothing more than some people saying NO.... so o well bravo for asking I would too....

no spare $$ here...

I don't know if they'd have given me one or not - I never bothered to ask...I just bought it. And my extra money is accumulating monthly until my new 750 is delivered. After, that, I'll be banking for a vacation next spring and will gladly accept contributions to my vacation fund... smile

I don't think I would have

I don't think I would have qualified for a free update, but I would have gladly shelled out the $$ for it even if I had. Garmin offers one of the best quality products that I've seen. To me, it's worth every penny to purchase their GPSrs, updates, and accessories for the simple fact that it will help them to continue offering a quality product. The minute everyone starts scamming and/or stealing from them, it'll mean they will start cutting corners (I'm looking at you, Microsoft..) to keep their own cost down ..and that's not good for anybody.

When you find something that you really like, you should support it in hopes that they can make it even better. Freeloaders screw everybody, including themselves.

..sorry, I don't mean to preach, but it's just how I feel.

Hey DRV

Id be real careful what you ask for or intend to do on this or any other forum, because like Motercycle Momma said it,s illegal. I almost got burnt money wise real bad because I let one of my sons use my credit card to buy something over the Internet that was deemed illegal by the company who was suing the company that sold this product. As far as the upgrade is concerned I think I paid $58.68 including shipping for it.I,am not saying that thats not a lot of money which I don,t think it is, but if you cut back on your coffee or beer or whatever it is that you enjoy, you will have the money in no time.

PS And you will sleep a lot easier!

If you don't have one, set up a PayPal account, post a link and see who you can get to make contributions. You never know, you might get a free vacation. P.T. Barnum did say that there's a sucker born every minute... smile

Scooter2

Scooter2,

That is a pretty good price isn't it? I might want to buy one of these to upgrade my 2730. Are you able to share where you bought it from?

.

Anybody get updates for c330?

Has anyone received map updates for the c330? I am in an email loop with Garmin on this -- bought the c330 a little over a week ago and they say (as you probably know) that the c330 won't hold the Map Update 2008 City Navigator® North America NT, just the lower 48 or Canada, so they are still shipping with old maps. But they are perfectly willing to sell me for $70 the same mapset that won't fit...

Sheesh.

Sheesh.

Use the search box above for loads of information on the c330 and the update. It can be updated and has been. It does require a card reader/writer for your computer to do this. Has been explained many times in other threads...

I bought it from Provantage for $53.14. I think the total was $58.68 including shipping. And I got it in three days. Ordered it on a Sunday and received it on Wednesday!

the price of garmin updates

the price of garmin updates is much cheaper than other competitor's companies. you are only able to unlock one unit per update. if you purchased the unit after the release date of the update you are entitled to the update at no charge. if you bought the unit before the update was released it will be purchased. why does it make sense to people that they should receive updates in the future for free?? i don't get it?? if i buy a product, then two months later there is an updated product i'm shit outta luck. that's the way it is with electronics. there will be a new iphone within the year and they won't update all the old iphone's to the new one's software for free! you can bet on that.

Garmin Updates. . . . cont.

I just contacted Garmin on Monday about the 2008 update. I purchased my Nuvi 360 in April 2007. I did not qualify for the free update. But he did offer the 2008 update for $30 plus $2 for shipping. Done deal. It will be in my possesion early next week. They are flooded with calls on the update. I'm sure the guys at Garmin will cut anyone a deal if you ask. Just be nice!!

Even better example, the price of iPhone just dropped by $200. Do you think Apple/AT&T will give back $200 to those that bought earlier?

It's the price you pay to have high-tech gadget before others.

Hi all,

I just got off the phone with Garmin. I explained that my unit was purchased in May and was wondering if I can get the new map update. My contact’s reply was well….okay. He mentioned he was out of the dvd’s until Wednesday and that’s when it would be shipped. This is so cool.

Guys, It’s worth a shot to give them a call. You might get lucky.

The C330 won't hold all the maps. It makes sense to load the maps where you are locatd first to the unit and the remainder on the SD Card. Example: I will be loading my C330 with the 48 states and remainder on the memory card.

Thanks! That encourages me to hope. And your other note confirms what I had also hoped -- that once I had the lower 48 loaded I might be able to load the rest on an SD card...

Internet access required for update

FPichon wrote:

On the update DVD one of the requirements are to have internet access for the upgrade to work. So I suspect that the unit S/N and and software product key are linked through garmin for the need of internet access.

Garmin won't provide updated maps

I purchased a StreetPilot C-330 on Wednesday (9/26/2007). I phoned on Friday about the updated maps and was told I would have to pay for the new map software because the StreetPilot C330's had come down in price so much in the last couple of months. Are others getting the same story or did I get a bad CSR?
