Keeping The Windmill Alive – January 2025

Perhaps you can post on a new book you're reading, a new hobby you're taking up or about random finds as you finally get around to cleaning out the..., or your most recent adventure?

Anything to keep your windmill alive.

Please keep comments polite.

This thread will be closed on the last day of the month and a new one will be opened.

Motorcycle Family

Finished my annual ritual . . . took each motorcycle out for a last-day of-the-year ride yesterday. Had to let it warm up a touch and then took them for the first-day-of-the year rides this afternoon ¯|_(ツ)_/¯

This was a little hard to do when we lived in Alaska. Here in Sin City, not so much grin Sometimes it's just the little things that bring a bit of joy.

happy surprise

I'm reviving the boiling water humidifiers on my furnaces, having not run them for years. It is a pain in the neck to remove the mineral deposits, so I was happily surprised on opening the first to find I had left it in clean condition.

to the garage to get the snowblower out. Amazingly it starts after 21 years. Don't drain the gas tank and the electric start broke when it was about 5, been pull starting the majority of its life. It's not small either, 29".

Hi!

Happy new year!

Re: Keeping The Windmill Alive - January 2025

When I saw this post, I thought of the game that we've played while traveling as a family. We count windmills (We live in Iowa, where old windmills are still common.). First individual or team to 15 windmills (or whatever chosen number) wins. Any verified windmill or mill stand counts, even if laying on the ground.

I've always thought that I'd like a POI listing of windmills to give me a beep when one is about to come into view. Since it seems that I'm generally the one driving, I haven't been able to make one for myself.

Boy Am I Glad . . .

we don't live in the areas currently dealing with the winter storm. Have a family member that lives near KC, MO and they got dumped on over the weekend. They don't have to go out anywhere and are sitting snug inside a warm house. Seems they don't care if they have to wait for Spring before they go out again smile

Windmills

Windmills turn with purpose.

I'm doing a poor job of emulating one here.

Maybe next week.

Happy Hew Year to you all.

Cabo

Just back from a week at a fancy resort in Cabo. Went because my wife's nephew had a friend who suddenly couldn't join them after already paying. We paid about half what they had paid (they were thrilled to get anything). I wasn't real interested but my wife really wanted to do it so we did. (Married, 52 years. "Yes, dear"...)

It was okay but not my thing. For what it cost (even with the steep discount) we could have had a 7 day coastal cruise with everything included. My wife got it out of her system and agrees that it really isn't her thing either. Harmony achieved.

Repair Cafe

I participate in an international organization called Repair Cafe and I find it to be extremely satisfying. You can do a search and see if you have a Cafe in your area should you like to participate (see https://www.repaircafe.org/en/). What we do is repair items (maximum 2 per individual) brought in by people. I’m an electro/mech tech so my task might involve putting new guts into a lamp, replacing a cord, perhaps a new belt on a vacuum, etc. Our cafe is quite large and meets in a local church. We have techs that do wood working, sharpen knives, do bicycle tune-ups, computer repairs and even two seamstresses. There isn’t any charge, except for parts but donations are accepted. The goal is to keep perfectively good items out of landfills.

My most fulfilling task to date was a 19-year old autistic young lady who had an electric guitar that wasn’t operating. Her mother, knowing that the batteries had leaked, had been foresighted enough to bring several types of battery compartments. It took me about a 1/2 hour to completely strip out the old components and rewire in a new battery pack. As I said earlier, we don’t charge, but when the young lady started hitting those strings and the guitar worked fine her smile was payment enough. But as I said, we don’t charge.

Our cafe meets every two months for four hours. A local pizza shop donates pizza for all the techs for lunch. This varies from cafe to cafe. I’m aware of another nearby group that only meets for two hours.

kids' first ice hockey game.

It's really exciting for them to actually get to play. Yep, that Zamboni did the ice for you and the clock has been set to 60:00 for your game.

The other team did have way more playing experience, but my son won a face-off and I caught it on video. They lost 7-3, but had tons of fun.

Looks like it's . . .

time to give the old windmill a spin. Tough to get old. With two of use, we spend too much time shuffling between Doctor appointments. At least that's what it seems like this week shock
