Garmin Nuvi 3590 LM Screen Orientation

Hi All.

I have a backup 3590 that I am trying to use.

But the screen orientation is stuck on Portrait mode. I flip and turn the unit all around, but it does not change.

Under the Display setting, there is no option on this 3590 to change to. Landscape.

Once again, I've done a factory reset and also tried selecting the Default/Restore setting.

I also did a complete factory reset.

But the display is still stuck in portrait mode.

Any help/suggestions?

Thanks

I don't have a 3590 so I can't test it but the presenter states that it applies to the 3590. If so, you won't have auto-rotation available but instead can manually switch from Portrait to Landscape.

On the other hand, page 65 of the manual for the 3500 series which includes the 3590 does not mention Orientation, so if you don't see what the YouTube shows for Display Options, the 3590 may not offer it.

Interesting

From the link charlesd45 offered, the 3590 is auto-orienting:

nüvi® 2300/3400/3500 GPS Navigators

nüvi® 2360 |nüvi® 3450 |nüvi® 3490 |nüvi® 3550 | nüvi® 3580 | nüvi® 3590 GPS navigators

I assume that auto-orienting devices must have some internal component affected by gravity to know which way is "up" and this leads me to think that prazert's 3590 has a stuck sensor or a bad connection from the sensor to the device's processor.

I wonder if giving it a good wallop or two from different directions may free it up.

A “wallop” likely

The orientation sensing device isn’t something like a mechanical switch that detects position and could get “stuck”. It is more likely to be an onboard surface mounted 2-axis accelerometer that does nothing more than detect the detection of the pull of gravity. In lay terms, they can be “tuned” electronically to minimize the effect of bumps in the road. These devices are sometimes as small as 3 x 3 mm, slightly less than 1/8 inch square and are less than $1 in quantities See https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/memsic-inc/MC3416.... I’m not saying that is the one that is used by Garmin, just similar. These days they are in virtually every phone and tablet.

A wallop won’t hurt, but I’d think a defective accelerometer or defective solder joint is more likely the cause.

Garmin Nuvi 3590 LM Screen Orientation

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

IT appears that the 3590 does not offer a selectable orientation, only automatic.

So I think my only option at this point is to try a good old fashioned whack or two.

I have 2 3590's that are not operating properly.... I wonder what Garmin would charge to check them out and perform repairs?

Would it even be worth it ?

Check Palm DR

Thanks. I checked out the site. They have the 3490 listed, but not the 3590. I have sent them an email asking if they also repair the 3590.

Thanks Again.

3590 Screen Orientation

Well..... a good couple of whacks fixed it !!!!!

Who would have guessed, but it was worth a try.

Screen orientation is back to normal, and is automatic back and forth from Landscape to Portrait as the unit is rotated.

I still have the the other unit that loses power. Will maybe send it for repairs depeding on cost.

It is fairly easy to replace the battery yourself. The battery is about $25 and the company provides any tools needed. The DIY video is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGlqOLE-N7Q. The company link to order is in the video comments.

I learned that raising children.

3590 Orientation

Well... Dang! The fix didn't last long

It's back to only displaying in Portrait mode.

The whacks are no longer working..... :.(

These units have an

These units have an accelerometer on the motherboard, which is what the device uses to determine whether it is in portrait or landscape. Yours I don't think has necessarily failed, but I do think that the accelerometer has lifted off the motherboard enough to break the connection.

This is repairable with some soldering skills. But, given the age of these devices, it may not be worth it. Things like this might also explain why Garmin stopped offering devices with auto-rotation.

Like you, I expect, I've only use my GPS in landscape mode.

But given your situation, I wonder what you'd find if you used your 3590 in portrait mode for many city/rural/etc trips over the next few weeks. I do think that most of the internet images of cellphones I see being used for route guidance are shown in portrait mode. Maybe you'd like it. If trying it, please let us know your results.

I'm reminded of my youth and watching small B&W TV. So often, the old Dumont TV needed a good whack or wallop or behave. It was a TV topped with rabbit ears, and since it only offered Channels 2-13, there was a UHF box to get Channels 14-83, too. Am I dating myself? wink
