On the Map #2

Jim1348 started a post on the 45th parallel and it reminded me of Point Roberts Washington.

While Point Roberts is not on the 45th it is on the 49th parallel and an interesting place on the map.

Point Roberts is surrounded by water on three sides and Canada on the forth. The only way to get to it on land is to go through Canada and a US Customs checkpoint. It's nearest land in Washington is 9 1/4 miles away.

Point Roberts was basically isolated from the rest of the world by land during the COVID-19 shutdown of the US borders.

Check out these photos of Point Roberts, Washington State:

On The Map #2

That reminds me of a story. I was chatting with a Lake of the Woods County (MN) Deputy Sheriff several years back. We started chatting about the uniqueness of the Northwest Angle in Minnesota. You can drive there from the rest of the United States, but you pass through Canada. Or, you can fly there or go by boat.

One of the interesting things is all Lake of the Woods County Deputy Sheriffs MUST have a valid passport AND carry it on their person while on-duty, since they travel through Canada to patrol the Angle.

All of the firearms owned by the Sheriff's Office are registered with the Canada Border Services Agency.

On the rare occasion that they would make a physical custody arrest in the Angle and have to transport them to the jail in Baudette, the prisoner MUST be transported by aircraft or boat. They are not permitted to take a prisoner through Canada!

Driving there

Interesting. I used Google Earth to go see Northwest Angle and there it was, tucked way up there in Minnesota. The fact that if you want to drive there you have to go through Canada made me wonder what route GE would come up with from my home in NE Ohio to Angle. The short answer is none. The start and stop locations are pinned but no route gets generated. Interesting again. FWIW, GE doesn't include the "Northwest" part of the name, just the Angle."

Carter Lake, IA

This reminds me of the small town of Carter Lake, Iowa on the Missouri River. As far as I know you can only drive there from Nebraska.

Just a side note

I saw an old WWII movie last week titled ‘49th Parallel’. It was a movie about German submariners coming ashore in Canada to do a sabotage job and then getting stranded. They then tried to make their way across Canada. Typical of a lot of the propaganda movies that were made during the war. Not a bad movie but you could tell that they were trying to really make the Germans out as the bad guys.

Yeah, I've studied "The Angle" before, I never go anywhere but I've been a lot of place via Google maps. I'm a map geek, love places like the Northwest Angle and Point Roberts.

I've never seen Carter Lake Iowa before, cool and interesting. I have seen other places like it though.I enjoy reading how places like these came about.
