RFC: Club List

Doing my small part for my new (nuvi?) community, I have started a project to create a POI file with all of the ACBL sanctioned duplicate bridge clubs.

Does anyone else have a club list or an association list? I would hate to be relegated to "other" ....

Cheers.

ACBL Strike One

Having listened to the silent majority, I posted my first cut on the ACBL Bridge Club file. As of now, I can't find it on the site. I posted it (only) a couple hours ago, so maybe it's still in the pipeline. If it's not:

miss poi, please help.

Thanks.

I sent you a message

I sent you a message regarding your file. It will be up tomorrow after I make some corrections.

Miss Poi

Phone Phains

Do you know how to correct the part where the phone number, which shows up all nicely formated on my nuvi660, isn't dialable?

Thanks again.

Ok thanks for letting me know that those were not real duplicates and that they were two different organizations that share the same spot. I am glad that you caught me and now I know to ask first on a file like this.

Miss Poi

Need to use GPX format

Keith, noticed the file you posted is CSV format. You'll need to reformat it to GPX in order for your 660 to recognize it as the phone number.

There are many options. You can do this manually using a text editor or XML editor. Or use numerous apps available to convert from CSV to GPX. However, be warned that some converters (including MapSource) DO NOT generate valid GPX format and may cause compatibility issues.

CSV Means No Dialtone

So, I should quit messing with the csv. Thanks. I hope this is on Garmin's todo list for POI Loader...I'm certain it's a trivial task.

Do you like any one converter over the others? Preferably one that DOES generate valid GPX wink

Cheers.

Actually, the CSV format for POI is very specific and currently does not support for phone (you can only put it in the description column), so don't expect POI loader to support that with CSV.

There are quite a few converters out there and many are discussed at this site, and are free. Just search for it.

However, not all converters are the same when it comes to creating GPX. Some create everything within their app including the actual Xml tags. Therefore, there's no guarantee that the document created is always a valid Xml document.

Others create using DOM (the right way) which self-enforce the semantic rules specified by the schema (Topografix and Garmin) and the tags are created automatically by the object (this ensures that the document is valid). I use the .NET XmlDocument object in my program to create my GPX files.

There are also many Xml editors (both free and commercial grade) that can help you create valid GPX files manually like you would with CSV. Many of these editors can validate and let you know if the document in question is good or bad. Some even have an intellitype-like feature that walks you through according to the schema.

Surprisingly, MapSource does not create a valid GPX file. I created a sample file and noticed that the tags for extension was specifying namespace multiple times. And sure enough, when I opened it with my XmlSpy, it told me exactly what I suspected.

Hope this helps...

Net yet wiser

Helpful, yes, thanks. I am now smarter, but not yet wiser. But I get the message sensai: one must map one's own route. Good thing I bought that GPS.

Cheers.

Look at some sample GPXs

Keith,

Take a look at one of my files I've uploaded. You should be able to use it as a template to create your own.

As long as you don't delete any tags, you should be ok.

Regards
