Mapsource comment

This version of MapSource no longer supports Windows 98, Windows Me, and Windows NT.
Works with Windows Vista.
Although this software is believed to be reliable, it has not yet been released for production and should be used at your own risk.

MapSource for C-340

For anyone who would care to comment:
1) What benefit is there to the MapSource on the C-340?
2) What kind of things can I do with the Mapsource program that I can reasonably fit on my C-340?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks all!

mapsource

Mapsource goes on your computer.

you can "manage" your favorites.

you can create .gpx poi files.

you can easily "browse" the map and view the "pre-loaded poi's" on your computer.

you can create "TourGuide" files. (For units that support TourGuide files, the 340 doesn't)

There is probably more, but that's all I've used it for.

Toiur guide

So how do you create the tour guide files?

MapSource is on the new 2008 disc

MapSource is on the new 2008 disc, a Garmin tech emailed the instructions on getting it from the 2008 UPDATE disc to computer.

When I updated, it was put on my computer automatically. However, I can now call up the old or new version. Very interesting for comparison purposes. Don't know if you had to have older version already installed or not, mine was...

Take a look at the Help File in POI Loader

Creating TourGuide Files

TourGuide is a feature available on compatible Garmin devices. TourGuide files include Custom POIs with descriptive .mp3 audio files. When you approach a TourGuide point, the .mp3 file plays and provides you with information about that point, much like a guided tour. TourGuide files must be saved as .gpx files.

NOTE: TourGuide files are usually created by third party developers.

To create TourGuide points, follow the steps for creating Creating Custom POIs in MapSource and use the File/URL field to attach the appropriate .mp3 files to the points. The .mp3s must contain the word “TourGuide” in the file name to activate the TourGuide feature. For example, “TourGuide.mp3”, “TourGuide USA.mp3”, or “TourGuide 12.mp3” are all valid TourGuide file names.

After you have created all your TourGuide points, save them as a .gpx file. See Creating Custom POIs in MapSource for more information.

After you have saved your TourGuide points in a .gpx file, you can save them on an SD card or load them on your compatible GPS unit using Express Mode or Manual Mode.

Adding Pictures to TourGuide Points

You can add .jpg images to your TourGuide points by following the steps for creating Creating Custom POIs in MapSource. Save the .jpg images and TourGuide .mp3 files in a directory, then use the File/URL field to link to that directory.

You can also include the path to the .jpg image in the ID3 data of your TourGuide .mp3 file. Search the internet for more information on ID3 tags for .mp3 files.

Am I the only one who is having an issue with my waypoints having info deleted from them after I send to Mapsource and then transfer back to GPS? In other words, I send over a waypoint with the address in tact and when I send it back to the GPS, the city, state and zip have been deleted. Is this happening to anyone else and if it isn't, please give me some tips as to what might be happening...thank you.

Newbie

Hi, I am a newbie to GPS navigation and all the fun it promises. Is Mapsource the best interface for the add ons that can be included for my Garmin c530?

Disk 2008

I have the 2008 update disk, can you tell us? or email me?

OK maybe I'm confused. What is the program to edit trips on your PC and then upload to the GPS.
I have the SP C550. It is updated w 2008. Is Mapsource the program uploaded/updated to my GPS or something else?

???

MS Streets and Trips

Can MS Streets and Trips 2007 be used to manage and/or create .gpx files like Mapsource?

I've not had your problem....

I don't recall having your particular problem...I usually end up with duplicate entries, then have to delete from the gpsr.
kch50428 explains better here

I have used hornbyp's program GeePeeEx editor to add phone numbers etc to my existing favorites so they'd be dialable with no problem. It's actually much easier than mapsource.

A link is available via the faq section - under "useful software & web tools"

Cannot get it to work

I am new to GPS and downloaded Mapsource used my unlock code, then when I plugged in my Nuvi 350 it put my favorites in but when I tried to to transfer the maps it said "There are no maps on this device". I went into settings on the Nuvi and under "Map Info" I had City Navigator NT 2008 with the box checked. Too late to call Garmin until Monday.

MapSource from UPDATE DIsc

This is for PC only sorry MACs.

PLEASE NOTE this is copied and pasted directly from a Garmin tech email, the only change I made was to #5 regarding the UNLOCKING OF MAPS, my unlock code was their and I deleted it. The Unlock code I deleted was the same as on MY.Garmin.com under "MapSource® Unlock", you may want to go get that prior to attempting this.

Your GPSr does NOT need to be plugged in to your computer to do this.

If you feel at all uncomfortable doing any of this please don't, I would hate to cause any of you stress, contact a Garmin Tech Rep. I got this VIA email from the Second shift people, they seem less stressed after the phones stop ringing. GO FIGURE

I believe I read on here that Garmin has a newer update than Map Source 6.12.4.

Good Luck Please let me know if this works for you.

Jim

You are not transferring maps, only Favorites. You can transfer your favorites (waypoints on mapsource) between your PC and your GPSr.

My comment is listed again as the previous comment is not indicating "new" so I am assuming the open forum is not seeing my post...thanks

You get your favorites to show up in the box on the left and map on the right...

What you have to do next is click "Edit" then "Waypoint(s) Properties" add your comments then click "Ok"
I think this is what you are looking for. (I hope)
