Parking in Philly on the Center Lane

Several times when visiting Philadelphia, I have been shocked to see cars (and tractor trailers) parked on the center lane of busy 2-way streets. For example, on Broad Street in front of the Broad Street Diner. This has a painted center lane with a double yellow line on each side of the parked cars, but on streets with concrete sidewalk center dividers they also park.

Is this even legal? Are there other cities where they do this? A Google search on this came up empty.

The diner had good food!

The other day, at my house (not in Philly but in New York) two guys delivering a refrigerator at the worst possible time, 5 PM, because of heavy traffic, parked in the center continuous turning lane, and waltzed across traffic with the 150 pound refrigerator. You don't see that in New York! It came to me later that they must be born and raised in Philadelphia! This is not legal in New York.

Obviously I can no longer spell

The saying in NYC is "legal shmegle."

Obviously I can no longer spell in NYese.

No, it's not legal, however, it's tolerated, for the most part, because parking in South Philly is impossible. It's been like that for as long as I can remember.

Thanks for the correction. I would prefer Boston where it's spelled Legal Seafood.

middle of the street parking

Does Philly allow the middle of the street parking?

In NYC, they have started to put parking lanes between the bike lane (which is next to the sidewalk) and the roadway. Getting out of the care is dangerou, you have to watch both the cars and the bikers speeding by.

They've been doing that in certain parts of the city for a while now. You can see an example here: https://i.postimg.cc/W4GyDyYd/parking-philly.jpg (looking at the photo it's the parking on the right in the Google screenshot)

in the 80's

Living in upstate NY, I loved the show Cops.

I saw that in an episode shot in Philly (I think it was the one where a guy had greased himself and was running naked in a house).

I was baffled and today I know that's Broad Street, cars parked diagonally in the middle of the street.

Another oddity in Philly (doesn't get any more normal for me after 24 years), is the lack of alternate merging. Cars try to get into traffic at a 30-45 degree angle at the beginning of on ramps, rather than accelerate then merge. That wouldn't fly in NYC.

Phila has a lot of good and bad, maybe overall good. But the real estate hasn't panned out.

I did learn something, though. My friend is 7 years older, and he is paying his house off 3 years later. So it does in fact matter t
That his house was more expensive to begin with, in Fairfield CT.

That same friend saved my a**. In 2002, I was looking at houses for $47,000. I bumped my budget up to $98k. And being a good friend, he said c'mon now. Certainly you can afford more than $98k. This is a house. It's an investment. You want to be in the best location that you can afford, and I know you can afford more than that. That was good advice, 21 years ago.

is like Troy, NY. You can put a garbage can or chair, to reserve your parking space on the street.

Obviously, it would be fairly easy to pick up a chair or garbage can, and move it, then park one's car. Just not advisable to do so.

You should see Stockholm Sweden then

Mopeds and bikes are a way of life. They have the right of way over pedestrians. And if you aren't used to it you WILL get run over. You do a lot of walking and it's easy to forget if you aren't from there.
