Any Garmin suggestions?

Consider refurbished

I’m not up to date on the current Garmin models but I do suggest you consider refurbished models from https://www.factoryoutletstore.com/cat/107540/garmin-automot... once you get recommendations and make a decision. A key thing to consider would be screen size. Also make sure you get a device with lifetime maps and traffic. In that regard look for “LMT” in the name of the device, or something similar.

Also, devices that have “Smart” in the name often require pairing with a Smartphone for full functionality. I personally don’t care for that feature, finding the standalone device more than adequate in the Philadelphia area.

Used or refurbed

I agree that refurbs and even used models are what I'd look for and buy. Some online Garmin dealers offer many refurb devices. I also have been happy using ebay for used models. If buying used, be sure that the Seller has great feedback and is including the factory mount and not just selling the GPS device.

The old nuvi 3597 remains a favorite by many here, and although some have reported issues, I also have and like the DriveLuxe 51.

If you have a smartphone, a Garmin device with can Bluetooth to the phone with a Garmin app and that will offer the best traffic data, road closures, weather, etc. The Garmin app uses very little mobile data in case that's a concern. With the Garmin app on a smartphone, the device can Bluetooth phone/text to a connected vehicle's audio system and simultaneously Bluetooth to the GPS for traffic, weather, etc.

almostbob, do you mean that TomTom made a mistake and wrote a bug into the software? Further, that it will be corrected in an update?

I have had ....

good experiences with refurbished models.

Hi Rob, this is just a follow-up response. Our technical team is working hard on a permanent fix, but unfortunately, we don’t have a confirmed date for this yet. As soon as I have an update, I will update you with further information.

Meanwhile, keep an eye out for the update of MyDrive Connect.

My first GPS was a TomTom One

...company purchased (around 2006) for all service personnel that travelled extensively. Great little unit at the time. But one day while making a relatively long trip, I looked over at the unit and it was smoking. I remembered seeing a Best Buy ad that morning that mentioned Garmins were on sale, so as soon as I saw a Best Buy, I purchased a nuvi 265. Today that 265, with a purchased LMT, is my backup. It still works great.

I recall, back then, that I felt the Garmin was easier to use due to a more intuitive interface. I suppose that was a key factor in continuing to buy within the Garmin product line.
