Keeping The Windmill Alive – May 2023

Perhaps you can post on a new book you're reading, a new hobby you're taking up or about random finds as you finally get around to cleaning out the..., or your most recent adventure?

Anything to keep your windmill alive.

Please keep comments polite.

This thread will be closed on the last day of the month and a new one will be opened.

on Sat

we went to Roxborough and ordered 5 cheesesteaks from Dalessandro's.

RLC intersection at Henry and Walnut and it needed it.

There are signs warning pedestrians not to cross mid block.

Horns honking and relatively aggressive drivers.

But we were glad to make the trip. The steaks were excellent, but, I have to say with confidence, my favorite place is just as good. It's usually gonna be the non tourist joints that are very good imho

Happy Monday. Hope everyone

Heading To This Week

Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and back.

It is May

I can't believe it.

Arizona

Using the trusty nüvi 760 to travel around Arizona camping. Also using it for my Holiday Inn Express POI file (need a shower occasionally!) and it's old enough that it plays audible books. We listen to the books through the truck stereo system and when the nüvi has directions it interrupts the book, gives the directions, and then picks up the book about 1 second prior to the interruption. Because it's actual audible books and a built in audible player it also lets me make bookmarks. Love the little bugger. The new units may have other advantages but I keep my trusty 760 because of these features.

Trip To Ivey Eye Clinic in London, Ontario

Plotted a Trip Planner route for a trip to Ivey Eye Clinic for retinal surgery. This allowed my wife to drive part of the route ad my daughter to drive the trip home.

Neither had used the GPS before or had driven there before.

Used Basecamp to generate the custom POI. Worked great.

Garmin gps vs google maps (recent experince)

Drove from Virginia to West Virginia and came back to Virginia in two days. While driving to WV, I used google maps, and while coming back to VA, I used Garmin GPS. I thought Garmin would find fewer narrow and rural roads since the GPS I have is for truckers' use (I bought it from a trucker in 2015, and I love it), but it brought us through some crazy narrow mountainous roads that google maps didn't recommend. I am pretty good at driving on mountainous roads in Appalachian areas, but it could be risky at night. Next time, I will listen to google maps and not depend on Garmin's suggestions, but I will still use it as my backup.

Be sure your GPS is set for

Be sure your GPS is set for Fastest Time. The route you describe sounds like Shortest which will take you on pigpaths and back roads.

went to the

circus yesterday. It's amazing how a circus nobody ever heard of, sets up a tent and goes to another town with a bunch of tractor trailers, how talented the performers actually are. Almost like being an actor--a person can be really good yet nobody ever will know who they are. Made me think of Anthony Quinn as Zampano. Imagine Food Network's Giada's grandfather produced that film.
