Map Update 2008 Failure

I have good news, and bad news.

My free Map Update 2008 DVD arrived today. I started the update, but when I returned to see if it finished I found that the process failed. My computer was off! Not sure what caused it. I restarted my computer and tried to do the update again, but my nuvi 200 says: "No detailed maps found that support routing. The nuvi cannot be used without them."

This error message coves the keypad and prevents me from entering my pin to unlock the nuvi and I am not near my security place. It will be 4 days before I can get my nuvi to the security place and hope it unlocks.

The moral of the story is, make sure you turn the Garmin lock off before trying to do an update.

I am so glad I turned the password security off first!

I installed my new v2008 maps tonight. I turned off the security and did a full reset first. I just guessed it was the thing to do.
I don't remember reading the recommendation anywhere to disable the security first.
I was lucky, for sure, this time.

Need to order one

I need to order my free update DVD

Were you using a USB Hub?

If you were, try installing again, only this time, plug directly into the computer and do not use a USB hub.

Can't Connect

I did not use a hub. I did see a warning about that.

I cannot try installing again because my nuvi is locked and I cannot unlock it because of the error message over the keypad.

I don't have internet access at my security place, so I might have to return my nuvi to Garmin to fix the problem.

I'm on tech support hold right now.

Americas Lite???

I got my nuvi 200 unlocked and copied the map image to it from the Map Update 2008 disk.

Instead of version 8 my nuvi now says "Americas Lite Basemap 4.00" I thought it would say "North America 2008". Did I get the wrong maps?

Looking in the wrong place...

To see the version of your mapping software, press "tools" (the little wrench) and then "Map". Press "map Info" in the center at the bottom of the screen and it will tell you what version of City Navigator you have installed. The basemap refers to part of the GPS unit's operating system.

Hope that helps.

Garmin 765T...Is it about the destination, or is it about the journey?

try this

not familiar with the nuvi 200, but if you touch the
wrench > see if there is a "map" if so touch that, and see if there is something that says... "about" or "version" or "map info" something like that.

The online manual really leaves much to be desired.

thought on basemap

I'm not sure it's so much an "operating system"

I believe it's just a basic map without much detail and without roads etc.

For example, I can go to browse map mode, go across the atlantic ocean and browse around europe. Major cities are listed, but no roads/poi's etc. I believe this would be the "basemap". The actual v2008 update (detailed map) would place all the roads/poi's etc within the basemap.

Think of the shape of the US, just the outline. That's the basemap. Fill in all the roads, topography, poi's etc, like the cover of a Road Atlas, and that is the detailed map (the new v2008 update)

I could be wrong - done that before..lol

Using a hub

I used a hub when I did my update and it went without a hitch. As a matter of fact I do all my updates and poi loading over the hub and never had a problem. Never saw a warning about using a hub.

Now watch me have a problem the next time, now that I jinxed myself.

Thanks. Map Info says I now have City Navigator Lower 48 States NT 2008. I was mistakenly getting the map info from the System screen rather than the Map screen.

Manual Update worked out

Well, I do not know what caused the installation to fail, but I was able to copy the image file to my nuvi manually and got the map unlock code eMailed to me from Garmin tech support, so I am up and running again. My parent's dirt road is now on my nuvi, so I know it is more up to date that what I had! It was worth the struggle.

security

how do you turn the security off? cause my garmin will not update. I have a C330.

Don't know on the C330

On the nuvi you press the wrench, settings, security. I'm not sure if the C330 has Garmin Lock. Does it ask you for a PIN when you turn it on?

....

no it doesnt. but when im installing the update it says No detailed maps found that support routing. what do i do?

.

What maps are loaded on the GPS unit right now?

This is what happened to me

This is exactly what happened to me after the installation failed. I had to manually copy the gmapprom.img file from the DVD to my nuvi. There are three image files to choose from. I picked the 900K file because the full file won't fit on the nuvi 200. The important thing is to rename the file gmapprom.img
