…your civic duty. Good job! Someone has to do it. My wife worked the polls, both as a precinct official and as a presiding judge for many years until she got tired of arguing with people about where they should actually be voting. You would be surprised at how many people don’t know where their voting precinct is.

Driver License Renewed!

I have an April birthday, and this year was the year I needed to renew my drivers license for the first time in 8 years. Because of age, I will now need to renew in 5 years (when I am 80 if still living!), then every two years after that.

I was concerned this year for two reasons ... the first being declining vision (cataracts and epiretinal membranes on both eyes). My eye doctor assured me that my vision is still well within the requirements for operating a vehicle and gave me a certificate, so they didn't require me to take the vision test at the DOT. That was a relief in itself.

My second issue was a bigger one relating to the pending requirement to obtain the "gold star" real ID on the license. I started preparing for this a couple of years ago when I ordered a birth certificate from our state records office. I never had a copy of my birth certificate (my parents couldn't afford the fee back in the day), so when the state sent my certificate, I discovered to my horror that the doctor who registered it had spelled both my first and middle name differently than what my parents had told me and what I have used all these years on all my legal records. I asked the DOT about my options since my birth certificate didn't match any of the other required identity documents needed to get the Real ID. They said a legal name change would be the simplest because otherwise I would have to establish a recorded identity using the spelling on my birth certificate which would take several years at best. So I hired a lawyer who helped me through the court proceedings required for the legal name change, then ordered a modified birth certificate with my "new" name that I have used and been identified with my entire life (including all my historical education, church, employment, marriage, SS, income tax records, etc.) What a MESS! But after all this, the DOT awarded me a renewed drivers license with a gold star and the same name I have always had and used. At age 75, I now am a real person with a real identity!
