Some history on wav and sox.exe

Hornbyp was the one that got the ball rolling on soxe.exe and wav files, when someone asked about getting voice alerts on a Garmin Nuvi 200 series. Units that does not have a mp3 player. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/13429#:~:text=by%20all%20acc...... and http://www.poi-factory.com/node/13041 . Member, Gary A was the first to post a download location for the sox.exe . See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/16728 .That was back in 2008.

It is always fun to go back and review those early days when we were all learning. As far as I know Garmin has never documented or acknowledged this feature of the non-MP3 devices. It makes me think some programmer way back when put in this "easter egg" and leaked it to a GPS enthusiast who exposed it in the forums.

I also like to look back on the old post history. I always worry when a members calls Garmin about the sox.exe and wav files. Since it is not a documented feature. One day they may pull the plug with a change that will torpedo our voice alerts. So far a long track record.

Congratulations Pwohlrab on your COW award. I had a nuvi 265 at the time and still do, but passed it over to the wife. When it was posted about the sox.exe and wav by Hornbyp I jumped right on it. Was so excited to get the voice alerts at that time.

Thank you both for your contributions and kudos on your COW awards! smile

Congrats Pwohlrab & Charlesd45!

Congratulations to both of you. I only fairly recently learned about sox.exe when I got my Drivesmart 55, since all of my previous units had mp3 players and didn't need it - glad to know not to update, thanks to your forum contributions. Enjoy your week in the C.O.W. spotlight!
