toilet paper

I found all the articles interesting, first hoarding, then not really, people are home and not somewhere else, need more of it actually, and mills can't simply switch from commercial to private, etc.
I wonder what the deal really is? This is a product that's always been hard to cross-shop, but to me, the simplest way is cost per sq. ft. Thing is then you go 2-ply, but there are no federal standards for softness.
We're trying to observe the stay at home and it's truly difficult to get things online and for pickup or delivery. But I ended up ordering a 80-roll box of toilet paper on amazon for $49. Not their brand which is cheaper but Scott made by Georgia Pacific. It sells out in minutes. 1 cent per sq ft 2-ply, but an old post said it used to be 0.0067 in 2014.
First world problem, yep.
A First World Problem Indeed
I've come a long way from using torn pages from outdated Sears, Roebuck & Co. catalogs and other mail paper trash stored in the outhouse. Scrounging suitable wiping material is coming around again full circle.
huummmm
u guys still using the old corn cob, or the cold green moss off the log outside of the out house LOL I know that you guys aren't using the gym or eating out as much and a lot of the forestry trail heads are closed but really do we need that much toilet paper or paper towels? and if there is only two of you living in the home and you only go out once a week why would you sanitize you house every day? caution is a good thing but paranoia isn't !
My grandfather always carried...
...a corn cob in his pocket. I noticed it one day when I was just a youngster and asked him about it. He said that it was for backup. Not understanding, I asked him backup for what? He replied, “In case there are no leaves.”

I don't sanitize my house at all.
And that's because I am the only one living here. I do take all the necessary precautions when I go shopping though.

You could make a 1,000 sheet roll last almost 1,000 Days. Take sheet, fold into 4 Quarters, tear center corner off
Not yet...
We haven't purchased any TP since this whole thing started. We also haven't seen any in the stores the few times we've shopped for anything. People should just freaking stop being so damned greedy and hoarding stuff. We're bound to need more TP at some point and I'm going to be really peeved if there still isn't any available. People suck.

I think I'm going to need a diagram for this one though.
one?

Does anyone really use only one sheet per session? I just can't, nor do I want to, picture that.

I'm already on the "Watch List" here
So I can only explain in detail on a "Need to Know" basis if you have proper Clearance. But I can say this much, when I was with the Herd (173rd ABN) we used to get "New Guys" in Nam and they would ask about the TP in the C-Rats. We would explain in Detail how to make it last for the duration of each Op. It was great fun seeing the look on the NG's face.
TP
We are a family of 3 in the house.
One of those big packs from Costco usually lasts a couple of month.
I don't understand those people who were buying 4 of those huge packs at a time.
What the heck ?!
again
So much information and disinformation with the virus. One alarming one was of course the IF YOU ARE NOT SICK DO NOT WEAR A MASK. Then all the top doctors saying um, yeah, a mask would slow the spread, so make one at home, just don't use one that a medical worker needs. And then I see people walking down the street with surgical masks (where did they get them--I think they had them all along but didn't take them out).
Based on what I've read, hoarding would not be sustainable until now, there just isn't anywhere to put it. But it's not just online sellers gouging the $46 amazon box of 80 for $149, it's Costco themselves.
The Costco pack (house brand made by GP as is most brands) is one of the most reasonable--$17 for 30 rolls, 1 cent per sq ft. Costco.com has some (out of stock though) which are 3 cents per sq ft--3X what they sell in the stores.
Amazing amazon stock nearly hit an all time high and hiring another 75,000 on top of the 100,000 they just hired. It's good to be king.
And yes on the first world problem, I rememeber going on an extreme camping trip where suffice it to say we didn't see any other people for 2 weeks. Leaves were fine. Today? Not really sure, we can't even get within 6' of another human (and we know 6' no longer holds true). Is it safe to use foreign substances in 2020....
seriously

We usually grabbed one of those every 3rd trip to Costco, and never closely even monitored how long it lasted (it's 30 rolls). We are 3 as well but have a 6 y.o. so that would imply we use less than a normal family of 3.
I honestly got tired of the, "Oh you can get toilet paper, you just have to get there 1/2 hour before they open, the seniors won't buy it all there will be some for at least 15-30 min."
That's why I had the amazon and GP boxes on my amazon list, and when I could, I ordered it. Not for resale just to avoid once and for all the competition to get toilet paper...it's just interesting to see comments from 6 years ago and realize the cost is 50% higher today than in 2014 (someone spelled out .00667/sq foot)
Some Interesting Theories Here:

I was at the supermarket yesterday and heard one shopper say "I have one closet full of TP and I'm starting another".
The sad fact is, he was serious.
And that is why a lot don't have any at all!

It's JIT
There is an news story online that is interesting. It explains that the "Just in Time" (JIT) supply chain caused the problem. JIT is when you get supplies as needed and do not store what you need in a warehouse. When you are just about to run out the next delivery arrives.
I saw an example of this while I was at a Chrysler car assembly plant in Canada. I was working for Siemens Automotive and was there for almost a month checking for leaky fuel injectors. Well, one night they had to shut down production because of a snowstorm in VA. A truck coming from SC loaded with power brake boosters got stuck due to heavy snow. Since they were on JIT, they had to shut down the assembly line because you can't drive a car off the line without brakes.

Lucky Break
As part of our normal shopping, we just happened to buy toilet paper before the TP "crisis" hit. So we have remained in good shape.
Nevertheless, when we shop we still have been perusing the paper products aisles to see if they have supplies available. I guess we are voyeurs. Some recently became available, we bought the minimum suggested quantities.

when
when it all started prior to the stay at home, I was for the first time a bit shocked how the super center types of supermarkets could actually have no meat (this is next maybe). It was startling to see. I'm not alone because pics were circulating online and through social media.
One item that was in total abundance which I thought was funny. Corned beef. It was due to upcoming St. Patrick's Day. That's the one time that tough cut of meat is on sale, like $1.79/lb. or so. All the meat was gone, but there was so much corned beef, fully stocked. Like nobody wanted it. We've found if the water is changed serveral times, the salt can be extracted.
Still hard to imagine simply hoarding is causing the situation with toilet paper...
I guess
When this is over, TP sales will go into the toilet. (no pun intended) Paper companies like Scott will likely lay off their entire work force for the rest of the year since everyone will have all they need.
Easy

That procedure would be similar to giving someone the middle finger but dressed up with a piece of toilet paper !
