School's out for (spring &) summer .... or the latest COVID-19 victim.

Latest COVID-19 victim, all Pennsylvania schools.

PA Governor Wolf orders all schools closed for the rest of the year.

My wife is a school teacher, teaches strings (orchestra). Very hard to teach music to elementary students via the computer but that's what they have her doing. Fun fun fun.

How sad has this has become. I'm certain there will be many more school closings to follow PA's announcement.

At the closest elementary school to my house, a school bus driver tested positive and exposed many children to the virus. On getting this news, the principal closed the school immediately. It was the right call.

The next week the governor closed all the schools.

Rather....

Rather safe then sorry.

PA schools have all been closed for a several weeks already, April 30 was the tentative date for reopen.

This thing isn't going away as fast as hoped hence today's announcement. At least now teachers can plan accordingly knowing they won't physically return to school and focus on working the bugs out of this cyber schooling.

My wifes problem is when teaching an instrument, especially to elementary schoolers, it often requires physically helping them to hold their instruments correctly, or fixing a broken string, knowing the correct tension to apply, etc., seeing it doesn't always work for youngsters.

Just to clarify ...

... the schools have been ordered closed for the rest of the ACADEMIC year. It is possible they might open again later this calendar year.

That said, what took him so long? They announced the same school closures for the academic year here in California weeks ago.

That is correct

Rather safe then sorry

Yeah, my bad, I assumed folks would understand that, with the headline I used "School's Out For (Spring &) Summer" they may open up for the next "school" year, normally in September here, if this bug is gone by then.

Safest Approach

In my opinion, the school year is over. there is no way to social distance in schools. Children will not distance, my niece doesn't understand why she cant play with her friends if no one is sick. Most children are social creatures who want to be around others. Contact can't be prevented without extraordinary conditions regular school don't have.

The same

in Washington State.

I

I have a 6 y.o in Kindergarten. When I see him reading a book, I realize, we have the public school system and teachers to thank. So now his education stops. Yes, best to be safe. The loss to society of this virus is across the board. Rich, poor, young, old. Whatever is lost, is lost forever. But nobody predicted this would happen. What is curious is how and what will change forever. When it started we thought young and those without underlying conditions were safe, and if so, schools can keep going.

disappointing--I can see the elementary school in the distance, and kids are playing basketball, riding bikes, hanging. Would I be doing the same at their age? Maybe. But they could give their parents the virus.

The problem, as you say in your next quote, was they could be carriers without getting infected and give it to those with compromised health situations, like me. Although I do not know anyone personally infected by COVID-19, and hopefully never will, I do have a friend who knew a middle aged, very healthy weightlifter, that succumbed to it.

I know when I was younger, heck probably well into my 30's, I (thought) was invincible (and selfish) and wouldn't give this social distancing a second thought.

Sadly there are many who feel that way today. Local parks had to have the hoops taken off the backboards of basketball courts, and the nets from the tennis courts.
