You can buy a replacement battery for under $20. Some of the replacement kits include the necessary tools to take the case apart and replace the battery. There are online videos that show you how to do the process.

On some of the newer devices like the Drive models, the power adapter might not provide enough power if the battery is completely dead. You will just have to try it to see. The bigger problem might occur if you attempt to update software and the battery dies during the reboot process. That situation could brick your device. That said, it is probably unlikely that the Drive 50 will be receiving new software updates.

Good video at https://www.newpower99.com/Garmin_Nuvi_50_Battery_Replacemen.... Note the battery is also sold at that site but you can do better on price. Having said that I have used newpower99.com and found the battery to be very reliable, unlike some eBay sources.

Understood...

It is somewhat questionable as to whether it makes sense to spend even $20 for a battery replacement on the Drive 50 model, especially if you are uncertain about the repair. You can pick this model up as a refurb for about $50 to $80.

You could try to disassemble the unit before ordering a new battery to make sure you can get the case open and the battery removed without breaking a cable or otherwise damaging the device. If that goes well, then it might be worth taking the chance on a new battery.

These are just my thoughts. This could be a good excuse to just order a newer or more advanced Garmin wink .
