Basecamp

I use basecamp, since uses the same map as your GPS. I put in start & end points and any specific route points that I want.

I then let BC create a route and add waypoints, if necessary to keep it going the route that I want.

same here

I end up putting my final route into Base Camp for transfer to my unit but I also use Streets and Trips even though the map in it is now over 6 years old.The advantage to S&T is that it allows you to set a target for driving time and shows an area where you can plan an overnighter. That's a big failing in Base Camp as far as I'm concerned.

The "OLD" MapSource had more choices and that is why I still use it as well and prefer it over Base Camp.

There are other features I like in my 2013 S&T. Set for start of the day and end but have as much as a 2 hour overrun. You can set for fuel cost, your type of driving. Set a rest stop for every so often.
But unfortunately so many roads are now out of date, especially when I enter Mexico. Strangely enough the program still asks me if I want to update the construction files.

MapSource

I do not know if I can post the instructions for installing this, the latest version of MapSource v.6.13.3. In my opinion it should not be illegal or pirated since you'd only be using the real Mapsource file v. 6.13.3 using it with the legal maps on your computer.

Without some trickery this version will not install, you must have a previous version of MS installed.

Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you the instructions, How To do the work around. But I do not know if a PM will come to me, I've had problems here on the Factory with PM's. It needs to be fast since I was delayed for my departure to Mexico and I may leave tomorrow, Saturday or Sunday, as soon as my TIP arrives which I ordered on Oct 2nd.

You might try the instruction on the following website to install Mapsource, there are two sets of instructions.

For any scammers or spammers, NO this will NOT allow you to download illegal Garmin maps. You must have a Garmin map already installed on your computer.

Best of luck.

Thanks

At this point I think I'll leave things as they are. I don't have a pressing need and BaseCamp will suffice.

First download a free (donations accepted) & legal Garmin compatible map file here:

https://www.gpsfiledepot.com/

Then download Mapsource via the link provided by Melaqueman

Gps file Depot also has tutorials with information on how to legally load Mapsource.

basecamp

While BC does have a lot of the functionality found in S&T, it is not as easy to plan with as you cannot segment trips into daily drives easily nor can you change estimated speeds for different mixes of roads.

As an example, set up a 3 day trip and then edit where each day ends based on 8 hours of driving time. Include a fuel stop, a one hour lunch break and a couple potty stops. You just can't do it in Base Camp but it's easy in S&T.

I May Sound Like A Record Being Replayed,

but like so many other people have already said, the program that I find most satisfactory for PLANNING my trips is the old MS Streets & Trips.

So far I have not been impacted by the age of its maps, but I suppose that it will eventually happen. Until then - or until some new program arrives that is superior - Streets & Trips is my choice for that purpose.
