And for both PC and Mac, the Garmin Release notes are now two versions out of date with only 6.16.0 showing as the latest version.

I updated on my laptop with no problems.

And Yes, uncheck the "Run in the Background".

Updated notes for Mac and PC: 6.17.0

The notes are out now and up-to-date.

PC:

For our Fitness devices, if Express downloads a software update to the device during a sync, the user will get a notification that an update was downloaded and needs to be installed. Previously, the software update would get downloaded, but until it was physically installed, certain features of Express would not work with the device, such as installing CIQ Apps.

We’ve added a hyperlink to the Safety Camera Purchase page. This link will direct the user to a FAQ that displays the coverage area for each region.

Other minor bug fixes and improvements.

Mac:

For our Fitness devices, if Express downloads a software update to the device during a sync, the user will get a notification that an update was downloaded and needs to be installed. Previously, the software update would get downloaded, but until it was physically installed, certain features of Express would not work with the device, such as installing CIQ Apps.

If a map update included multiple map images, Express would only install one of the images, rather than both. Both maps are now being installed correctly.

Helped alleviate a server error when attempting to purchase a Europe Lifetime Map Update.

I've long wondered why Garmin sets the default for GE to run in the background? It isn't slow to load (although it once was) nor is it a memory hog. Anyone have any thoughts on this policy?

To notify you once every 3-4-5-6 months, or so for a new map update. Actually, GE is for all it's exercise units. The GPS is a sideline.

Update

As always when I click on GE it tells me an update is available and asks me if I want to install it now. I reply to the affirmative and NOTHING else ever happens.
I need to go into settings and "About" to install GE.

This is on two separate Laptops every time.

Also, my experience has been that even with fast broadband, after saying Yes to the update, it takes several seconds (10-ish?) before things start to happen. I've forgotten the sequence it follows, but after the "yes," it needs to close the open GE, download the update and with Windows, there's also the User Account Control permission to be given, depending on the UAC setting chosen.
