POI proximity alerts on TomTom?

[I posted the below earlier on another thread as a comment, but decided on second thought that I probably should have asked as a separate post. Apologies if anyone is reading this twice.]

Hi Everybody!

I just bought a new TomTom Start 52. I can't figure out how to enable an audio warning when I get near red light cameras or to display them on the map while driving.

I'm getting the sinking feeling that TomTom has disabled these features (almost like they want to make sure you have to pay them for TomTom's RLC alert service) but just thought I'd check.

If disabling proximity alerts for POIs is a concious business decision TomTom made to increase revenue, maybe this post will give others a heads-up before they make the same mistake I did of buying a TomTom GPS.

Thanks.

That's not a problem

with my GO 620. Unless I am mistaken, your Start 52 is no different than my GO 620 in that regard.

thanks for the suggestions.

Unfortunately I had no luck getting the audio proximity sounds to play for my custom POIs and this option was entirely missing from my TomTom settings.

I looked into it some more online and it looks like TomTom, at least for my GPS and some other models, doesn't allow an audio alert feature for custom POIs.

Thought I'd pass this info along in case anyone else planned on purchasing a TomTom hoping to enable POI audio alerts. Probably best to only buy TomToms from stores with good return policies.

Thanks again for the advice.

Guess my next GPS will be a Garmin.

Are You Saying

Are you saying that the instructions you were given by "almostbob" in the other thread ("POI's on new TomToms") on this same forum do not work?

update

Hi guys,

Just wanted to give an update. I tried almostbob's ogg and wav suggestions without luck. It might be that the sound alerts feature was removed from recent Mydrive Connect versions. I was able to find an older Mydrive Connect version but the GPS has so many other issues (random crashes, freezing) that I'm just going to return it and get a Garmin instead.

It's a shame, TomToms used to be highly configurable and I was happier with their old product (I dont think I'll ever understand, though, why TomToms only tell you the street name for turns right before the turn, but won't announce the street name in the penultimate notification before the turn comes up). Hopefully they get back on track with their product design.

Thanks again almostbob, Tom, and dobs108 for the help!
