Bertucci’s Italian Restaurant ($$) began in 1981 when Italian-born Joey “Joe” Crugnale opened the first brick‑oven pizzeria in Davis Square, Somerville, MA—complete with a bocce court and dough made from family recipes Over the next two decades it grew into a regional casual‑dining staple across the Northeast, known for its open‑kitchen layout and signature brick ovens that fire at scorching temperatures to produce crisp artisan pizzas, handcrafted pastas, roasted veggies, fresh rolls, salads and desserts made from scratch daily. After changing ownership several times—first to N.E. Restaurant Co. in 1998 and later to Earl Enterprises in 2018—Bertucci’s expanded to around 100 locations at its peak. Facing rising costs, an evolving restaurant landscape, and the impact of the COVID‑19 pandemic, it has since contracted considerably, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy multiple times and refocusing its efforts, including the launch of a new fast‑casual concept, Bertucci’s Pronto, aimed at maintaining the brand’s traditional brick‑oven heritage in a leaner format.
