Icon (is there a description of these symbols)

I think if you zoom in on the screen and icons it may tell you what it is.

Are you speaking of the large green or blue icons that appear on the map screen? If so these are the built in icons from the map file installed on your GPS.

The most common one is a large "heart" which indicates the location of one of your Saved Places/Favorites.

All the other built in icons that may appear are controlled through the Settings menu on your device. Go to Settings - Map & Vehicle - Map Layers - Up Ahead Places and press the black arrow on the right edge of that heading.

This will display the "Customize Up Ahead" screen. The 3 items listed there are the types of icons you can currently see. If you tap on any of the 3 items you will see a list of all the items that can be displayed. There is a separate icon for each one of these items.

I don't know of a place where these are listed with a picture of the icon but at least this will give you a listing of what can be displayed.

I went to Settings - Map & Vehicle - Map Layers - but I don't see Up Ahead Places and no black arrow.

All I have is Places along the road, Traffic and Trip Log. All with check boxes beside them.

I have a Nuvi 2597LMT.

There are so many restaurants and gas stations icons that they block most of the street info.

On my DriveLuxe 50 when I go to Map Layers there is a setting called Up Ahead Places ( sound like it' called something different on your Nuvi) and at the end of that wording but before the map displayed, there is a small solid black right pointing arrowhead. Tapping that arrowhead opens the Customize Up Ahead screen listing the 3 default up ahead categories. Tap any one of those 3 items will give you a full list of the possible icons you can pick to display.

Your mileage maybe different on your Nuvi.

Since there may not be a way to get a list of the possible items that can be displayed with an icon for every devices (I get the list on my DriveLuxe 50 but can't on my Nuvi 3597), here is the list that I can see:

Restaurants
Gas Stations
Banks & ATMs
Parking
Rest Areas
Lodging

The icons for these items should be fairly easy to determine when they appear on the map screen.

None of these shows on my 2597 GPS, I see only one sometime, always the same and I don't know what it means.

When you edit a favorite or saved place then select change map sympol. A screen comes up withe icons for your unit.

Use the following sequence to display and customize Up-Ahead on 3597.
Found it by stumbling around.

Settings --> Map & Vichele --> Map Tools

Put a check mark next to the Up-Ahead entry if not already there. Save.

Then

View Map, three-bar menu (lower right corner), tap on the up-ahead icon to display the three default up-ahead categories, if they are not already displayed. It has been a while, I do not remember what are displayed by default.

Tap on any of the displayed up-ahead icons to bring up the detail list of that category.

Tap the wrench icon (top-left corner) to bring up the "customize up ahead" menu.

Tap, hold and drag the up-down arrows to customize the display order the catagories.

The following steps update the up-ahead catagories to be displayed.
The procedure is not so intuitive.

Tap the name of the category you would like to replace. This brings up the list of available up-ahead categories.

Tap on the new category you would like to display. Press "Save"

Complete list of up-ahead categories on 3597. This is the same as shown by t923347.

I have the Nuvi 2597 and this is how my unit is set up for Up Ahead.

1-Touch settings.
2.Map & Vehicle.
3.Map Tools. Put check mark in Up Ahead plus any others items you prefer.
Touch Save.
4.Touch Map Layers .
5.Places along the road.Put check mark.
6.Touch Save.
7.Go back to View Map screen and touch it.
8.Bottom right you will see 3 horz lines.Touch it.
9.Touch Up Ahead.
On right of screen touch any of the icons to view the locations ahead.

Note. A lot of users per their posts disable the Up Ahead feature because when navigating, the icons use up a lot of the display screen.It has never been a problem to me to use this feature.
