Checking for microSD presence

Although I don't yet need it, I've installed a 8 GB microSD card into my nuvi 2689. Prior to insertion it was formatted (FAT32) in a Windows 7 PC using a card reader. Is there a way solely via the GPS to determine if the card is functional?

POIs

You could install a POI file to the SD with POI Loader and see if the GPS detects the file.

Or ..

Send data to the SD card using BaseCamp.

garmin express

Garmin Express will not show any indication that the card is there ready to be used. GE will not use the card for the map until it is absolutely necessary. Internal memory could be almost 100% filled and the card will not be used. When the card is finally needed, GE will split the map in two halves, part in internal memory and part on the SD card.

Well ...

Not necessarily. Some maps may be split, others may be installed in one block on the card.

True

On the Nuvi 50 GE put the whole map on the SD card.

SD Card Presence

Since the slot and card are so small, often timers I can't even tell if there is a card loaded into the slot !

This is

what I see on my Nuvis - - Garmin Express gives me warnings about the device being nearly full even though I've had 8GB cards inserted since new.

How about?

I believe if you hold down and push at the top right corner of the screen it will open up to a screen which has much information
including the serial number, size, etc of the SD card.
If it shows there you should be good to go.

Nope

Not on my drivesmart anyway, just the normal diagnostic screen.

Diagnostic screen.

Melaqueman is correct, at least for some devices. There are two diagnostic methods on many devices. Pressing and holding the speedometer on the trip log screen takes you to the developers menu and functions. This menu does not identify the SD card AFAIK.

The second diagnostic system is accessed by pressing and holding the battery icon on the main screen. On my 3597, if I scroll through the various pages, I get to one that is titled "Data Card Test Page" and it does indeed show the presence of the SD card. I am not sure which devices have this screen and which do not. My nuvi 755T and 855 both have it. I don't have access to my DriveLuxe 50 right now to know if it has it, but I suspect it does as well.

Well ...

Not on the DriveSmart 50 as far as I can see.
