Garminfone Wifi Use

I resurrected an old Garminfone. I want to use it in the wifi only mode, but it seems to be locked out. Does anybody know if some phones are just too old to even use in the wifi only mode?

As a side note, our old Samsung smartphones work just fine in the wifi only mode, but they also may have a somewhat newer Android OS, if that matters.

What does that mean?

Garminfone Wifi Use

When I try to go to a webpage, I get "Attention: A server error has occurred. Retry, or cancel and return to the previous screen."

When I try to access the Android Market, I get the same message. It does connect to the internet, via wifi. For example, I still have the SlingPlayer on this and I can watch television through either my Slingbox PRO-HD or 500 with this. It seems like maybe it needed to connect for some things through Garmin servers, but they no longer support that, but I am still researching this.

Which Android version does

Which Android version does the device run? I'm not familiar with Garminfone but Google search hits say they run Android version 2. That's ancient version. It is no surprise nothing works.

My guess

is that you are not connecting to the internet. Those messages sound like no internet. I don't think that the age of an OS would matter. I'm sure if I could find an ancient PC running Windows 3 I could connect. Are you trying to log on from home? If so then you should know your access codes.

Forget about Windows 3. Internet Explorer 8 can't even connect to a lot of websites. Try browsing the web with IE 6 on Win XP.

Well

With all due respect, I believe the OP is just interested in logging in on the internet for WiFi to use the Garminfone, but not to browse the internet.

Ok but what does the following post mean?

It sounds to me like he's already connected to the internet but he just can't get to Google Play Store. Some other places on the web block his device. Also, I believe Play Store app is a browser based app.

295W

For what it's worth, I fired up my old nuvi 295W which is essentially a GarminPhone minus the cell phone and tried various wifi tasks.

It connected well to my home wifi, was able to retrieve emails well, and as Jim1348 has found, was hit or miss on browsing. I could connect and display msn.com, poi-factory.com, and others but could not connect to many other web sites regardless of repeated attempts.

Probably has to do with the

Probably has to do with the USER AGENT the browser is sending.
