3597 Battery

Battery

It looks to be a 361-00070-00 and is surprisingly hard to find. Although a search on Newpower99 won't find it, a generic Google search does show it available at Newpower99:

If Batteryship stocks it, I haven't found it there yet.

If you replace yours, please let us know how it went. It may be quite the challenge:

I strongly suggest reading all the YouTube comments in addition to watching the video.

How long did your battery

How long did your battery last?
I just broke down and replaced my 1490LMT with a "refurbed" 3597LMTHD for about $169. - Did I get a good deal?? I ordered it the other day but I am still on the road with my 1490.

I like my 1490 but it went into the spontaneous boot crap after 3-4 years. I suspect the problem is either heat related or bad connection on PCB. I will get into it when I get home. But then I will have the 3597 so there won't be any rush.

I know I am going to miss the dashboard but I couldn't find any options for one.

Used to be a better video

When I first got my 3597 in Jan 2014, there was a much better video on YouTube, at that time. It was created by one of the battery supplier companies. Can't find it now, although it may be out there on the internet someplace. The video gave a much better step by step demonstration that started with 3597 closed - not already opened. At the time I was just curious about how the 3597 opened. I had just replaced my 660's battery by watching a YouTube video 2 times before opening the 660's case. And yes, I was successful - even with my big fingers. Opening a 3597 is similar, but not as obvious. And the proper tools, mainly the plastic pry tool, are a must for the 3597.

Recently there was a post here that gave some very good tips about how to extend your GPS battery life. I think that the biggest battery killer is HEAT! NEVER, NEVER, EVER leave your GPS sitting on the dash with the sun beaming down on it, as I am positive that is what did my 660's battery in. Some batteries have a device inside that will shut down (or limit the current) if the battery reaches a certain temperature if it is charged at too high a rate. Shouldn't leave it on the dash anyway, as it is a tempting target for thieves.

3597 Battery

I did find it on Newpower99 with a google search.Thanks.I did watch the video and it looks like a tricky job to pry it open.I bought it in 2014 as a demo from Best Buy,it was a display model so it was plugged in all the time so battery life is a big question. It works fine but not plugged in battery life is not very long. You can do programming but not much more.

A thought and a question

A thought: given the potential difficulty in accessing the battery and one YouTube commenter stating that the 3597 broke in attempting the repair, I think it'd be wise to order a replacement battery only after successfully opening the case. Even then, another YouTube commenter stated that the replacement battery was a tad too large and wouldn't fit in the 3597.

A question: Is this "3597 construction" carried through into the new Drive models or are the Drives opened easily like the older nuvis when using the proper tools?

Driveluxe same as 3597

CraigW, your question is answered over on the GPS Review forum (at least for the DriveLuxe model) in this thread: http://forums.gpsreview.net/discussion/31070/sick-garmin-dri...
