Oh My!!! Copying Current.gpx from 2 identical GPS's Doesn't work!!!

Change the name to temp.gpx and then Current.gpx willl copy the contents and display.

Here's another bit of upsetting information....

So the file I copied is 2142Kb in size...

I copy it over... and it reports slightly less in size, but still over 2000Kb....

Run Garmin and look for All Saved: It only 'sees' Garmin entries.... Shut off Garmin...
Connect back to PC... check filesize.... Reports as 2Kb !!!!!

P.S. I looked at file using Notepad, and there was no difference in the file headers of either file....

I always rename the current.gpx to temp.gpx and copy it to the
GPX folder. As phranc mentioned, after a reboot it will add it to the current.gpx file.

Once it shows up, I suggest you delete the temp.gpx file since it will add it again on your next reboot. This will prevent you from deleting any favorites (saved places) since they will recreated themselves when the temp file remains in the folder.

The reason why it didn't happen the way you did it originally is that current.gpx is a one way copy of what your nuvi uses. It writes to current.gpx only. What happens when you boot your device is that it looks for files named anything other than current.gpx, merges those files with what it already has and writes a new current.gpx

but after he renamed it to Jcurent.gpx it should have worked ... go figure!

Yup, that wouldn't work.

Assuming that is what you did JanJ, be sure to delete Jcurrent.gpx AND temp.gpx from your new Garmin. Otherwise you will have future trouble deleting/managing your saved/favorites.

It never ceases to amaze me how much good, and better than manual information I get from this site!!!!

I did find that temp.gpx still remained... (I had already deleted JCurrent.gpx from new GPS)... So I deleted temp.gpx, then shut down GPS, and disconnected from PC, and then started GPS back up and checked to see that favorites remains.... They do....(Interesting, it says current.gpx filesize is only 57Kb --- !!)

So everything should be OK.... We'll use it tomorrow to double-check and to charge the battery....

I added info to the document on saving favorites that the temp.gpx works as a 'merge', but it's obvious that other rules apply too.... and I'll need to re-read this thread and add more notes to the printed out document....

For the 'next guy' to prevent others from falling into the traps mentioned, should an addendum be added to the notes on Saved Locations backup?

JanJ, there is an explanation for why your current.gpx is smaller than you might have expected on your new device. It is because that file contains the trip log in addition to any saved favorites and routes. On automotive devices, the trip log is never imported from GPX files ... only favorites and routes are imported. Generally, the trip log consumes most of the space in current.gpx, so your current.gpx file will grow as you navigate with your new Garmin.

The reason for the massive decrease in file size is your old current.gpx has the driving tracks for your saved locations stored in it. When a new current.gpx is written the tracks aren't written with it.

I'm consistently blown away by the amount of concise data that I see posted when someone has an issue!!!
