I noticed in the last couple of map updates, my Graphic POIs are replaced with the plain jane ones. What happend to them?

More info

We need more info - such as Make & Model of the GPS unit. And are these POIs imbedded in the map or Custom POIs you have installed?

2639LMT, they were original when I did the initial Map update, not custom. I had quite a few, maybe 60-70% were graphic. Now after 1yr 10mo, most if not all are Plane Janes............

BTW, your user name and dog seems very familiar to me........

Symbols

That would be the map makers (HERE) who are changing symbols or icons, probably less work for them to use generic icons rather than individual icons for many different locations.
My guess anyway.

Username

The username was my CB handle from the 70's. I worked on foreign cars at the time. It's also the name of a band (from NYC I think) I found out.

The picture of the dog is "Jack" (as in One-eyed Jack) that came to us as our 4th "Rescue" Bernese Mountain Dog (BMD). We lost him last year in March when he was almost 11. He was the sweetest and most gentle BMD of all of our 4 rescued BMDs we've had since 1993. He only had one eye when we got him (don't know why as he was abandoned). He had Hip Dysplasia, bad elbows, arthritis, pigeon toed and on the small side for the breed as well as being overweight - no diet or pills worked the 9.5 years we had him.

In your GPS's settings is the "Map Detail" set to "More"? That may affect the icons. Also how close you are Zoomed in will affect them as well.

Map Detail is set to more. I'll give it a shot with the zoom.................

One other thing.

How much memory does the GPS have free? You can check it by hooking it up to a PC, clicking on "Start" and then "Computer". The panel that pops up will display how much memory is used in the Garmin and how much is memory is free. If there is less than 500 Mb free, you should consider cleaning out some files. Might not help, but I know that some operating systems use some of the free memory to make calculations and store graphics. There are FAQs here on POI Factory that detail freeing up some memory by deleting un-needed files such as foreign language files.

Also, low free memory could prevent a complete map update from occurring. The maps just keep getting bigger and bigger and require more and more memory.

sD card

Chief, is there an SD card installed? If so, Garmin Express would have used it and there would be no problem with the memory.

Info from Garmin Support.

Automotive devices that display POI icons on the map
Most automotive devices will only display icons on the map for your saved Favorites or custom Points of Interest (POI) files that you may have installed. To view the custom POI icons, you will need to zoom in the map to 200 feet or closer. The preloaded points of interest (restaurants, hotels, attractions, etc.) will not display icons on the map if they are not also saved favorites.

The device will show the POI icons on the map when it has started moving or is in an active route.

POI icons will NOT display on the map if your map view is set to either North Up or Track Up.

Your device will only display POI icons when you have the Places Along the Road or Up Ahead Places map layer selected and are in an active route.

To select the Places Along the Road or Up Ahead Places map layer:

Touch Settings
Touch Map & Vehicle
Scroll down
Touch Map Layers
Touch to add a checkmark on Places Along the Road or Up Ahead Places if not already selected
Touch Save
The device will now display POI icons on the map.

Branded POI icons
Branded icons are Points of Interest that show up on your map screen as the logos for particular businesses. Other Points of Interest icons may only show up as a small black dot with the name of the business.

Lots

Of free memory. I have a 16gig SD card installed not being used by Garmin yet.

BTY, it's the Branded POIs that went to plain jane POIs.

I take that Back

I have 2.1Gb of onboard memory free and the SD Card is 32Gb....

It is odd

How does the 2639 compare to your three 6x devices? Do they all show the same issue or do the 6x models continue to show the large number of graphic icons like Shell, Bank of America, etc?

It's been mentioned earlier but does the 2639 have Up Ahead features turned on. What view are you using: 3D, Track Up, North Up? If not 3D, see what happens when you use 3D. Your manual:

http://static.garmin.com/pumac/nuvi_25x9_26x9_OM_EN.pdf

with Up Here and Customization discussed on pp 3, 6, 7, and 14.

On my nuvi 3597, I can't say that I've noticed an increase in generic icons and loss of branded ones but then I don't look for them much and may have trained my brain to ignore them.

Is there anything unusual in what you do or have done with the 2639 like using the clone technique (at any time now or in the past), having additional maps installed, manually tinkering or moving/deleting files in the 2639, etc? When going to myMaps, what maps are present and which are checked?

Icons

Have you ruled out any of these steps as being the problem.
The preloaded points of interest (restaurants, hotels, attractions, etc.) will not display icons on the map if they are not also saved favorites.

I've not tried cloning anything yet. 3D has always been on. Funny you should mention the Up Ahead Feature, I've not used that in quite a while, maybe about a year ago when I drove out to Memphis from Eastern NC. I'll have to check that out.

All the POIs that I saved and changed out the "Heart" symbol to something different like a Hospital or Airport, still works.
Thanks everyone for the Help. I'll report back when I figure this out, it's got to be something simple.

It was the Up Ahead Feature

Enabled the Up Ahead in the Right Hand Window pane and most of the branded POIs came back, never even would have thunk it. I usually drive with it off as I like the map real estate to be as large as possible. Thanks all for your help!.............
