Thanks, will check what's new

Weird

Just checked Garmin Express on an infrequently used Windows 10, and it had GE 5.3.1 (installed 7/31).

It offered up 5.4.1 as the next available release from Settings, "About".

After installing GE 5.4.1 it then showed 5.6.1 as available from "About"

So now I'm on 5.6.1, but it took an extra, unneeded update...

Same

Still not updating normally.
It hangs on Garmin Device Interaction Service. Can't stop it or remove it no idea what it wants to do. I set it to manually start not auto. That could be an issue. Not wanting it run all the time. I always have to uninstall it, and remove traces in the registry. Inconvenient, but not a big deal since i don't use it that often.

Use Autoruns

While there are others here who will say "No, use MSConfig", I prefer to use Autoruns because it will let you find any number of programs that are running but do not need to. That will include Garmin Express.

You can get a "portable" "freeware" version here

https://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?q=autoruns&m=

Run Autoruns from the folder into which it was downloaded and unzipped. Do a "Find" on "Garmin" (without the quotes) and uncheck the three entries that you will find.

Then look at the "Logon" and the "Services" tabs to see what is running that you did not know was running and which you do not need. Uncheck them.

.

Learn to use services.msc, instead. It's built in to Winblows, and provides granular options for programs.

Thanks for the alert

Appreciate the notice.

Thanks

Thanks for the update. I was out of town and missed the first post.

Windows Vista

Just don't update if you are using Windows Vista. It will update automatically but after that GE will fail to start. So if you are using ancient MS system... relax, don't do it smile

Had a problem on my home computer

Followed the tips posted here and tried repeatedly to download. Finally installed okay.

GE

What are the updated features/bug features?

My question as well..

Garmin keeps coming out with these updates but what is the point? All the program does is facilitate downloading new maps.. which come out not nearly as often as these silly updates.

Thanks for heads up

Good to see others have had no issues with it.

No issues

I've never had an issue using or updating GE because I have never installed it. Maybe if the map updater stops working someday I will install it but until that happens I don't see a need for GE.

GE release notes

An interesting list of "fixes". Is there a similar list of fixes for the software that runs the actual Garmin? Nice that they are spending time fixing the GE.. With all the various models available I guess it is easier to make a new model than fix the problems with the old ones.

Here's the info for your nuvi 2689:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=7141

and for your 2597:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=6797

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=6361

To find these, the way I do it is to go here, then do a browser "Find" for 26x9 and again for 25x7:

http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/nuvi

As far as I can tell from these searches, your 2597 has not had a firmware update.

Most updates have nothing to do with maps but more to deal with the myriad of fitness devices that are now synced with Garmin Connect via Express.
