WiFi map update on Drive 51/61 models

I was expecting to see some discussion on the 2018.20 map update thread regarding the WiFi map update capability on the 2017 Garmin Drive 51/61 models. Maybe I just missed it, but I don't recall seeing any comments about it.

If you have one of the WiFi enabled Drive models, did you use WiFi for the map update or did you stick with Express? If you used WiFi, how did the process compare with your previous map update experiences with Garmin Express? If you used Garmin Express, why did you decide to not use the WiFi capability?

I don't have one of the new models, but am curious about how well the WiFi feature works compared to Garmin Express.

I'm going to do mine later tonight with the Drivesmart 61LMT-S I have.. I tried it once and it crashed but the software update worked fine via wifi. I only have 1.5 speed here so not real good for downloads.. so be aware of that. I don't know what Garmin has in it for accepting speeds. Last time I did the map update via Express it took 12 hrs or so here.

I have a DriveLuxe 51 and

I have a DriveLuxe 51 and used WiFi to upgrade to 2018.20.

The WiFi set up was pretty straight forward. I didn't count the WiFi upgrade time though. All I did was to connect it to a USB wall charger and let the WiFi upgrade do the job overnight.

It's pretty much like iOS upgrade on iPhone - you may use iTunes to upgrade the iOS. But if it can do it without a computer, why bother?

Thanks helloguys.

Thanks for your post helloguys. It is good to know that the WiFi update worked without any issues.

tried but crashed again

The 12hr download was loading to pc as well as device ..

I tried again via wifi and it crashed again.. The Garmin 61 lmt-s gave a error screen saying it failed after a while of normal downloading.. odd. When I hooked up to Garmin Express it only took about 8 min to finish.. Odd as well. But my internet speed isn't great and I was in my basement. My notebook and tablets do fine down there with wifi from upstairs. Next time i'll try to do it in the same room as the wifi antenna.
But it was fast..very fast compared to doing it via usb 2.0 and express.
