Route more persistant on backtracking when Toll Roads enabled....

Nuvi 2689LMT latest map, latest updates...

I normally do not leave Toll Roads enabled... and with the device set that way.... (Toll Road NOT used)....

I also drive the same routes often....

Comparing Toll Roads enabled vs. Dis-abled....On Same GPS, On the same routes...

Toll Roads Disabled: If I blow past a turn on a route it might prompt me with 2 or 3 attempts to re-join route, then it finds a new route and ignores the missed route altogether.....

HOWEVER:

Toll Roads Enabled: If I blow past a turn toward a Toll Road, on a route, It will CONTINUALLY try to get me back on that Toll Road, as long as I somewhat parallel that Toll Road....

More information: Normally I do not enable Toll Roads.... I take the Alternate road... But this time I visited, my route needed speed, so I enabled Toll Roads.... During Daytime..
That night, with traffic very light, I took Alternate/Parallel route... though I left Toll Roads enabled.... and Blew past Toll Road entrance due to lack of traffic.....

It was with this settings that Garmin took every chance to route me off the most direct route, back to the Toll Road, and have seen this happen more than once, on the same route, that I'm seeing a direct relationship with Garmin being more picky when blowing past toll road in a route (When Toll Roads are Enabled) compared to blowing past a non-toll road route with toll roads are disabled...

My $.02

Sorry ...

... but I'm not sure what your issue is here? If you don't want to travel the toll roads then set to avoid, if you set to not avoid why are you surprised when your nuvi tries to use them?

It's not a once or twice issue, it happens over and over again!

I think

I believe he is claiming that if Toll Roads are enabled, the Nuvi make a persistent and unjustified attempt to route via the Toll Road.

Which ...

... most folks would want if they'd selected to use them? If not why select that option?

Noticed something similar.

I notice that if I have toll roads enabled, it will route me to a toll road (no surprise), but what is suprising is that it will take me out of my way to get to a toll road that will end up costing me more.

My assumption is on the conspiracy theory where the algorithm used makes sure that you incur the most costs, which helps the toll companies make more money.

I don't mind taking toll roads on occasion, but I don't like going out of my way by quite a few miles to get to one. I guess the hard part is determining a route that is both fast and prudent and where stop lights are taken into consideration while routing. This of course is where the user has to determine the best route for themselves and not just rely on the GPS, but it is a pain to change avoidences while driving or deal with the annoying prompts. I guess, if you know the area, why use the GPS? Good question, but for me it is just the situational awareness of where turns are and what lane to be in.

There are also the occasions where I want to avoid the commuter toll roads, since they are parallel, but need to take a toll road later. This would necessitate turning avoidences on and off as I get closer to the toll road that I have to take.

Just my 2 cents worth...

faster time or shorter distance

People take toll roads and they enable toll roads on the GPS because toll roads usually have a faster time or shorter distance. That is the reason why he is being routed that way.

If other roads had a faster time or shorter distance the toll roads would go out of business.

stick to route tendency

I believe that when I first deviate from a suggested route, both of my last two Garmin Nuvi units (3790 and 3597) have tended to make a first suggestion that is intended to get me back on the route, without full consideration of alternatives. Not that they always do this, but often enough to notice. In these cases the suggestion is neither shortest distance nor fastest time, and is not the one that would be given by a full fresh recalc.

I've mostly seen this in local travel, so don't know whether it might play a part in the original poster's observations.
